Interpreter Cost

Each month the government pays an outside vendor to supply an over-the-phone interpreter to facilitate conversations between the public and a government assistor;this is a very costly service. While not all languages have high usage, the Spanish line is by far the greatest cost. Savings could be captured by utilizing internal support for Spanish service.

law enforcement pay & retirement

One of the biggest budget busters in the federal (and state) government is the enhanced pay and benefits and early retirement for law enforcement. Who on earth (besides the government) would have employees retiring at age 50, and paying out reirement benefits for another 35 years or so on each retiree? Especially since most federal L/E jobs are not police jobs where they have to chase gang-bangers down the alley. They... more »

IG service

Why does every federal agency have its own Inspector General service? It seems like there is a huge overlap of functions and unneccesary layers of management that could be eliminated by having one federal IG agency (sort of like the FBI). The agents could specialize in different areas (contractor fraud, computer hacking, etc.) but one agency would allow more streamlined, cost-effective service, more independence from... more »

Ways to save

I think the retirement requirement should be 30 years of service. No more than that. There are employees who are no longer contributing, but hanging on. Make room for the employees who still want to make a difference.

LTSO

We get a lot of shipping in and out. All we ever use is fed ex or ups. Why don't we use usps? I'm sure that they would give us a government discount to boot!!

Allow customers to deselect Paper notices.

For regulatory reasons notices and information on Privacy are issued to people whom interact with agencies, often duplicate reports are issued to spouses and represenatives. In the private sector you have an option to recieve the data as a secure PDF file, electronic format or in paper.

If you allow a customer to elect to recieve documents electronically ( acknowledging that electronic service is acknowledged to... more »

Make the world a better place

The President ought to keep his campaign promises, close Guantanamo, end the "Dumb War" in Iraq, and stay out of Libya. The President campaigned as a Democrat but has given us Bushes third term.

Shipping

Why do we continue to utilize FedEx, UPS, etc.. or outside shipping companies rather than the USPS which is a federal organization and in dire financial straights? All agencies should be using USPS instead of paying private companies (UPS and FedEx) for shipping.

Purchasing Accountability Reform

I have a Federal Credit Card. I buy supply items for my department. With the system that is currently in place all I need to do is get my purchase(s) approved by my approving official and a Field Budget Analyst. There are restrictions on some items we are not allowed to purchase (such as personal items) but other than that, all I have to do is provide a 'justification' for the needed item(s). We use to have a limit on... more »

Two pay systems

Go back to ONLY two pay systems. The GS (WG) and ES system. Get ride of core comp because this is a wasteful way to manage the tax payer’s money. You need additional people and departments to manager 4 or 5 different pay programs. It is time the Government get back to basic to save money and have all these different pay systems just is not the way to go. People can still get there bonus and pay for performance by the... more »

Oil Changes

Due to the amount of manpower apply and the overwhelming amount of evidence about extended oil changes, we could save a lot of money if we can just extend the oil changes to 4000 miles. There is really no indication that draining oil out of a vehicle at 4000 mile intervals would have a negative effect on the vehicle life.

Outsource for Military Upgrade Training

The government could save money by outsourcing military upgrade training to local companies near their military bases. Currently, the government is using joint base operations to train military on their jobs. As with any training, the costs can skyrocket. The federal government spends money on creating the course, maintaining equipment and facilities. The government also pays for the military member’s plane ticket, gas... more »

Executive Assistant

I've been completing a lot of travel vouchers lately, and I think it should be mandatory for travelers to fill-up gas tanks of rental cars before returning them to the airport or rental facility. Gas from the rental facility can cost between $7 and $11 a gallon. There is no suitable reason for this unnecessary expense. This implementation could easily save hundreds of thousands of dollars each fiscal year. It's absurd... more »
