Secretary

Delete or greatly reduce employee travel by using teleconferences instead Government-wide. This would save enormous amounts of money and the employees could still be close at hand for emergency siotuations. You just need to make an initial investment in top of the line Teleconferencing Equipment, perhaps more than one per station for those stations that have a certain amount of travel. The savings in travel could pay... more »

Salaries and Wages

As everyone knows our salaries/wages did not increase this year. However, I believe there is a way for the govt to save money and still reward employees with an increase. Instead of automatically increasing the base salaries every year, consider only increasing the base salary every two to three years, however, increase each step by a % or $ amount. So, if new people come aboard, they will start out with the base that... more »

Enable Regional Blanket Purchase Agreements for operations costs

Currently, our national contracting office does not allow Blanket Purchase Agreements (BPAs)for the removal & disposal of hazardous wastes (or for any other facility need for that matter). The only option available is single procurements when above credit card limit (artificially set at $3,000 limit). This results in long residence time for stored hazardous wastes - resulting in unsafe, dangerous conditions which are... more »

Congress Needs To Cut Spending

Here are my suggestion(s) to help the government stop wasting the taxpayer's money:
1) They should not be allowed to deduct their personal living expenses while in Washington. Ever hear of a tax home? The ordinary citizen cannot deduct their personal living expenses where they work.
2) Stop going on all these trips abroad. Does it really take an entire committee to go view a disaster area?
3) Stop using taxpayer... more »

2011 SAVE Award

Dear Vice President Joe Biden:

Our shorted Budget is the problem. The only things to solve it are work on the Income Tax and Capital gain. This is the source of money that the U.S Federal need.

We also need to cut the bills charge on each patient for health care program. The investors; the doctors; the lawyer; the dentists and pharmacists who make a lot of money but do not want to pay high income tax so the Federal... more »

Convert to a 9/80 work week.

JPL has experienced tremendous success with utilizing a 9/80 work week: one week four ten hour days, the next week four ten hour days plus one Friday that is 8 hrs. Hence, every other Friday is a "Regular Day Off" or RDO. While not conserving on "labor" pay, it certainly would conserve a lot of dollars on facilities not having to run for one day every other week.

Travel Expenses

When 4 or more employees travel to the same destination, the cost of hotel stay can be vastly reduce if two employees can share a room. I am not speaking of MD or the Executives, but the hourly paid FTE’s. Recently 10 FTE paid and average of $355 for a three day stay at a hotel, total ($3,550). Two to a room would be a saving of ½ that amount. This could save the government million over a short period of time.
Thanks... more »

Raise the thermostat to 76° during summer months

Every summer, the temperature of our building is kept around 68°F, despite typical D.C. outside temperatures in the 90s. This is a monumental waste of energy, a drain on the Federal budget, a strain on the power grid, and a discomfort to some workers. Many employees keep space heaters on during the summer! If a summer thermostat setting of 76° was strictly enforced throughout the entire Federal Government, savings... more »

Constitutional Conservatism

Most of the ideas submitted (like using energy efficient light bulbs, low-volume flushing toilets, etc.)will save only an insignificantly small amount of tax dollars. The real answer to the problem is to undergo major spending cuts and downsizing. Our founders designed a very limited government with specific, enumerated powers. There are so many existing agencies, bureaus, and departments that should be totally unfunded... more »

Chief Accountant

In order to cut costs in printing, publication, paper, office space the USG needs to develop a readily accessible powerful search engine which can easily and precisely retrieve needed federal information/resource from all federal sources. This will avoid printing, publishing and filing a bunch of documents which eat paper, ink, copier, printer and office space.

Incentivize Orginzational Savings

For funds not desiginated as no year funds, there is no incentive or hold back these funds. Usually they are spend with abandon in the last 60 days to stock up on items or replace items not worn out. If an agency expends less than 97.5% of authorized funds and mets targeted goals, 1/4 of the savings are designated as no year funds and credited back to the agency. If operationals goals are not met, the reduction below... more »
