Our agency has Video Service Delivery Equipment in Central Office, Regional Offices, ODAR and many Field Offices. I propose the government find more efficient uses for this equipment. Currently, our region is using the equipment to fill positions that could not be filled due to budget constraints. However, if more field offices had the equipment, Immediate Claims Taking Units could assist with walk in traffic (with... more »
The Department of Energy has a number of financial assistance programs for developing new technologies such as renewable energy projects. The programs run from initial, bench-scale (ARPA-E) to pilot scale (EERE) to commercial deployment (Loan Programs). However, the programs do not flow into each other. Align the programs to streamline the identification and commercial deployment of promising new technologies through... more »
It is a given that CPUs need to be replaced every so often to accommodate software upgrades and improve processing speeds. (Perhaps it is true that some agencies, such as SSA, replace them too frequently, but that is the subject of other SAVE Award ideas so I will not get into that here.) However, computer monitors have longer life cycles and so whenever agencies do a workstation replacement they should not simply replace... more »
Early in July I developed a beneficiary travel tool to expedite a task for myself and a colleague in calculating copious amounts of information on Beneficiary Travel mileage. Upon utilizing this tool, it became evident this simple tool could be used by other VA staff to more accurately complete beneficiary travel vouchers. The tool is a simple web based interface that tells the mileage between a Veteran’s residency... more »
Skype should be available for use. This will save millions in travel as many of the Outreach and Communication branches of the IRS travel a lot to instruct and meet with external stakeholders. If Skype was available, it would be a minimal fee to get a camera to attach to our existing computers ($5) and we coud then interact face-to-face right from our desks or cubicles.
Require Federal and State agencies make use of the Social Security Administration “Federal Benefit/Prisoner Data Exchange System” to enforce voter fraud laws. (1) Provide SSA with prisoner information necessary for determining voting eligibility such as, convicted felons (imprisoned or, released on parole or probation), illegal aliens, deceased persons, fraudulent voter registration. (2) Require States and voting authorities... more »
Require all Federal Agencies that provide federal benefits or aid must use the Social Security Administration "Federal Benefit/Prisoner Data Exchange System" when determining benefit eligibility according to the agency policy requirement for individuals, or beneficiaries of individuals, incarcerated in federal prisons. Patient have difficulty understanding, remembering, and following technical, confusing medication instructions, and so may miss, double up on, or otherwise miss-take medications. When patients fail to improve as expected, clinicians may unnecessarily increase, duplicate, or change medications. Resultant poor patient health and avoidable, prolonged, more complicated hospital admissions lead to poor health outcomes and... more »
There will always be a need for meetings but do all of them have to be face-to-face? No. With our technological advances and with GSA's current migration to the "cloud," we can communicate via our laptops or VTC. We need to utilize these "costly" technological investments.
All government employees should only use ipads or pcs for their work, including phone calls. Since virtual means “simulated by a computer for reasons of economics, convenience, or performance,” I’m proposing the following: No paper files. No calendars. No written messages. No staplers. No scissors. No rubber bands. No paperclips. No pens. No tape. No pencils. No printers. No office furniture, except the desk. Everything... more »
Many government agencys have duplicative IT development efforts going on within their Agency because the Agency's CIO does not have the authority or responsibility to oversee all Agency IT development efforts. Make each Agency's CIO responsible for all IT development within the Agency. The CIO would receive all the Agency's IT funding. All IT efforts would have to be approved through the Agency's IT Configuration Control... more »
Problem: The underlying problem is lack of Technology Utilization. Technology exists on every Government computer with functionalities, features, capabilities, and tools that are not being utilized and therefore the return on investments in Technology is low. Most end-users of technology are not technology experts and therefore do not realize the full capabilities in order to perform their functions efficiently with the... more »
Developments by companies utilizing cloud based computing (particularly Google) are resulting in an increasingly robust solution including enterprise class sercurity and online data storage. Firewall, IDS/IPS, Data Leakage Prevention, system wide applications, etc., can all be controlled "in the cloud" by connecting all remote users through dumb terminals. Dumb terminals allow users to connect to a central network without... more »
Every year, hundreds of new Social Security Administration employees travel to Falls Church, VA or St. Louis, MO for training. This costs the administration around $6,000 per trainee. In each of our offices we have a IVT (Video Technology) room. My suggestion for the President is to cut our travelling expenses by holding live video training in our own offices. Learning material can be sent to each trainee from their own... more »
