Currently if you are less than 2 years from your entitlement date and under 65 you cannot get into medicare. Some receive too much in benefits (due to contributions from payroll) they are disquailified for Medicaid through the state. The new "high risk pools" require a six month waiting period. This is just long enough to bankrupt middle income households.
I see advertisements for public assistance programs everywhere it seems and I can't seem to understand the logic behind it. There is no competition and the necessary contact information is in the phone book, if you still use one, as well as online.
I believe that all Medicaid and Food Stamp recipients should be required to attend healthy eating and food preparation seminars and if necessary smoking cessation and weight reduction classes. Too many people are receiving these benefits and wasting our money on preventable conditions related to obesity and smoking.
Do not penalize them for trying to find additional source of income to support their needs/goals.... more »
