Be Green-Print Only When Necessary

Federal Government agencies use millions of pieces of paper per day.

There should be reminders around the offices to "Be Green-Print Only When Necessary."

The federal government could save milions of dollars per year by eliminating many of the unnecessary print jobs on a daily basis.

Voluntary Reduction In Government Salaries

A significant reduction in government salaries can result in substantial cost savings. Ask employees if they would like to volunteer for a reduction in hours. This is a win-win situation for employers and employees. I would want to work for an employer that offered this opportunity. Of course the employer and employee would have to consent to the time off and it would be dependent upon the workload. I have worked... more »

Fire/kick out worthless people

The military, and likely all government positions are staffed by a lot of good, hard working people. There are also a lot of worthless people who do nothing but show up to work and collect a paycheck. Enforce the ratings system, and kick out worthless dirtbags. The ratings system itself isn't broken, our leadership is. Start at the top, kick out some high level officers if they won't start kicking out their own people/holding... more »

Employee Turnover Causes Unnessary Spending - Promote Within

I have no statistics, but each employee turnover would cost in program suffering as there are less hands to do the work, HR staff hours and computer costs to re-post announcements and then interview, select, validate, etc. Instead of posting positions as a (for example) GS-7 with no room for advancement, why not allow for every position to be re-evaluated when the work being done exceeds the pay level? I know that there... more »

HIRE MORE FREQUENTLY FROM WITHIN

HIRING FROM WITHIN can save money;

-Eliminate security clearance costs

-No relocation costs

-Reduce recruitment costs

-Requires far less training and eliminates orientation

-No Misc costs such as new badges, keys, door codes

My recommendation is to require agencies to offer jobs to current employees for a period of time before releasing external announcements.

Managerial accountability

Use Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Timely (SMART) metrics to hold managers accountable for the productivity of their employees. Rank employees for productivity. Standardize this across the federal government. Implement an annual practice for requiring a performance improvement plan for the lowest 10 % of employees. Terminate those who do not improve significantly within 6 months.

Combine Online Systems (Websites) Used by Federal Employees

We use over 10 separate online systems to take care of daily administrative tasks, and I believe that we should combine them all into one website, similar to how Google lets you switch between e-mail, calendar, documents, photos, etc. with a simple mouse click. Combining all these systems into one system and hosting it on a centralized server would take advantage of economies of scale, greatly reducing the electricity,... more »

Listen to the "Boots on the Ground" - Protect them from Retribut

Have forward thinkers 'read' and 'study' all the comments of Federal employees after articles about Waste in Government, such as http://www.govexec.com/mailbagDetails.cfm?aid=47997. The frontline workers can identify waste and fraud

Increase the Morale of Federal Employees

The morale of Federal Employees is low. We work hard to serve the Public, yet we feel unappreciated. We do not receive praise for good work, we work overtime because the budget cuts don't allow for the hiring of more of us; our pay has been frozen despite inflation and rising health care costs....A happy employee is a more productive employee. We need more pay! We meed to feel appreciated!
