Military Health Care Contribution

Currently, active duty members receive 100% free health care and only pay a small amount for dependent/family coverage.

I propose that all military members (USA/USN/USMC/USAF/USCG) contribute between $960 to $2400 per year towards their own health care coverage, scaled so that junior members pay the least ($80 per month) and senior members pay the most ($200 per month).

With nearly 1.2 million active duty members,... more »

Switch Coast Guard from Armed Service to Civil Service

The Coast Guard being the only Armed Service to conduct peace time missions and the only Armed Service not apart of DoD, should be switched from military to civil service jobs. This could reduce cost by the the millions and only improve the Coast Guard Business of Law Enforcement and it's other 4 missions. As a DHS service entity, the Coast Guard could be allocated better and more responsible funding. Additionally, certain... more »

Review Nautical Chart Distribution

Paper nautical charts are distributed to Coast Guard Cutters and other units on a regular basis by the Defense Logistics Agency. Many times these charts are not applicable to a unit's Area of Responsibility are discarded or placed in storage, never to be used. A large-scale review of chart distribution through the organization could save a significant amount of money in printing and shipping costs.

ONE COAST GUARD CUTTER COLOR (DARK BLUE WITH SILVER FLAKE)

Change the color of steel-hulled CG Cutters (which are currently Black, White and Red hulls) to one uniformed color hull - propose a Dark Blue Hull with Silver Flake (everyone enjoys a little shine) color schemed hull keeping the internationally recognized Orange Stripe and adding a white stripe (vice the current light blue). This color change could be accomplished during scheduled drydock cycles of all Coast Guard cutters... more »

Best Mistake! Have fun and make money with WPB 123s!

If the Coast Guard 123-foot patrol boats cannot continue to be used for service at sea, let's make use of them on land. They should be gutted and the exterior/hull used as a housing for CG-themed restaurant/bars or other recreational facilities. Whether government-ran or sold for private commercial management, we can make money instead of losing it. They should be established outside of current bases/facilities where... more »

United Agencies = Cost Savings + Improved National Security

Overall Goal

Instead of different military and Government agencies( Navy, USCG, Army, Air Force ) trying to be self sufficient and wanting to have/own various assets to meet their mission needs, these agencies should work together, share and co-ordinate their resources and assets, so that if not as Individual agencies but when united they are self sufficient.

Issue:
Various Government agencies own/acquire assets such... more »

Lawn Maintenance - Coasties not Contractors

I'm curious as to how much money we could have saved if we mowed our own grass at the various units I have been stationed in the past ten years. I've never seen any Coasties mowing grass, weed eating, etc. I understand that some contractors perform services we aren't able to but yard care? Maybe the savings in yard care could go to finding a better manufacturer for our uniforms. Our uniform's quality and appearance is... more »

Incentivizing Responsible Coast Guard Fuel Consumption.

Background:
Coast Guard guidelines for vessel transit planning are intended to maximize operational effectiveness. Each vessel in the fleet is expected to transit at a speed that uses fuel efficiently; enabling the unit to spend more time in the operating area, reducing wear on engines and saving money. Regrettably there is not an effective monitoring and enforcement mechanism to ensure personnel adhere to these standards.... more »

Pilot Video Teleconferences Eliminate USCG ALJ Travel for S & R

USCG Suspension and Revocation hearings for mariner licenses are heard by Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). The USCG could significantly reduce the travel costs and lost time for these officials by allowing hearings to be conducted via video teleconference.

These hearings are administrative in nature and published regulations already allow for these hearings to include telephone testimony, so adjusting to video teleconferencing... more »

Eliminate the Government Purchase Card Program

Their is no need to have a Government Purchase Card. The only reason that we do have the Purchase Cards is out of convienance.

The purchase card can easily be abused and justified. It is not advantageous to have because every purchase can be done through a Purchase Order; thus, eliminating the need to allow members to openly use.

A centralized supply command should be set in place that will allow requestors to order... more »

Female Uniforms

In the Coast Guard, females are issued unnecessary uniforms. If they are authorized to wear the male uniform, they should have to option to purchase the male items the first time the uniform is issued. For example, at the Coast Guard Academy, all females are issued two pairs of female tropical blue long trousers upon reporting in. These cost about $40/pair. Very few women continue to wear these trou into the school... more »
