reduce paper & decrease amounts of awards for mgmt

the government has gone electronic, but many employees/ALJ's print unnecessary documents instead of utilizing the electronic processes. It would be great if all the printers were set to print double-sided for all documents printed. This would reduce the amount of paper in half which would save money and help save the earth. Also, when awards are awarded, it should be the same amount across the board. They should not... more »

Multiplier Effect

SSA has two different programs, one that is based on work history and then the SSI department which is a federally based welfare system. The SSI program has a software program in place that identifies people who are working or whose parents are working (or who are self-employed) and have not told SSA yet. The SSI program gets a "diary alert" which allows us to stop/adjust the SSI check so erroneous $$ does not go out.... more »

Senior Case Technician

I think that at this time in our economy the idea of granting monitory awards to members of management should be discontinued. They are well compensated for there daily work performance to begin with. The dollar amounts that they recieve in awards are not in keeping with the cut backs that we have had to our bugets.

Social Security Mailing Cost

Save 4 - 6 million annually. Reduce Social Security Printing, Mail Prep and Postage of the annual SS Retirement & Benefit summary reports to the public. Current cost estimates indicate Document Printing at $22 per 1,000 ($2.5 million); Mail Preparation Folding and Inserting or Stuffing $5 per 1,000 ($575,000); Envelope purchases $20 per 1,000 ($2 million); Postage $ .42 each (2.5 million). One Federal Circuit Court for all Social Security Appeals

All appeals to federal court seeking review of final administrative decisions in Social Security cases should go to one national United States Court of Appeals. This would eliminate duplication of resources in each of the 94 United States District Courts where appeals currently start, as well as form one body of law throughout the United States for this nationwide program, instead of having different rulings in the 12... more »

Benefit Verification Letters Online

I would like to suggest that the Social Security Administration create a site on the SSA Website for benefit verification letters. The recipients of SSA benefits can create a user name and password for themselves and request a benefit verification letter online. It would really be cost effective to the administration and the recipients of social security benefits. Especially the ones that are disabled and have to come... more »

T2 Overpayments due to Work Activity

T2 Overpayments due to Work Activity

I have been working for Social Security since 2002.
Over the years a lot of the overpayments that occur from Social Security is due to work activity. A great way to save funds would be to carefully monitor work activity for those applying for Social Security Disability benefits and those that are already on.
If someone says they're working during the initial application process,... more »

STOP CHILD BENEFITS FOR RETIREMENT BENEFICIARIES

I work for Social Security as a Retirement/Disability Claims Representative. While there are several ways that SSA can save money - the one I writing about today deals with Auxiliary Child payments on Retirement claims.

For those of you reading this who were unaware - here's how it works: If someone who is receiving retirement benefits (which can be taken as early as age 62) has a minor child or a child who is still... more »

Recovery of Overpayments

Current SSA procedure says that an overpayment can be withheld through partial withholding of a beneficiary's monthly check for a time period greater than 36 months, only if a beneficiary can provide documentation that this is the most they can afford.

I propose that we increase the withholding rate in the amount of any non-Cost of Living Adjustment increase to a beneficiary's check. If it was proven before that the... more »

Expand Paperless Program to All Offices

If the Paperless program used by processing centers was expanded, and made accessible by field offices, teleservice centers, and all employees, it would reduce duplicate materials, save on material and non-material resources (specifically time), expand accountability, and reduce miscommunication.

As it is now, if a form is sent to a field office, and someone calls the teleservice center to see that it was received, the... more »

Lower water temperature- Install on-demand systems

The bathroom water temperature is very hot, we don't need the water to be that high, we don't shower at work. The water temperature just needs to be luke warm for use. By lowering the water heater temperature we can save funding. The on-demand systems also provide great efficiency as they provide warm water whenever the water is used, as opposed to the old systems that continually heat up water (even on weekends when... more »
