village houses

Here at Perry Point they are trying to demolish our village houses. Would it not be cheaper if they renovated them for the veterans to rent or to use as rehab houses.

send multi-dose Patient specific meds home with them on discharg

I suggest to find a simple way of allowing nursing to let the patients take their eyedrops, inhalers, creams, etc that are patient specific home with them when they are discharged from the hospital. If the doctor has written for continuation of med on discharge summary as well as a new/renewal of Rx, then let the nurse/pharmacist can verbally tell them to use it as prescribed on the new prescription label- as opposed... more »

Offer Early Retirement

I suggest that early retirement be offered with $1500/per years of federal employment. Then hire new GS Employees at lower grade. Also adjust annual leave/sick leave to a lower rate for new hires

Wasting 500cc IV minibags - RN

We should eliminate hanging the 500cc minibags of normal saline when infusing an IV antibiotic, for patients that receive IV antibiotics daily or one time a new 500cc bag of NS is hung and changed daily. On most occasions not even 10CC of NS is being used and the unused NS gets thrown away. We already flush the PIV and PICC before and after with either 3ml or 10ml of NS so why are we even hanging the minibags. Why... more »

24 hour print outs

Please eliminate the automatic 24 hour chart audits. I have witnessed our printer consume 1-2 packs of paper at one time in order to print all orders our patients may have. For a 400+ bed insitution, THAT"S A LOTTA TREES!!!

RN

I think the hospitals could save a lot of money if they eliminated the hospital "ward clerk" position. In the "old " days when there were paper charts, ward clerks worked hard and earned their money taking off orders, scheduling consults etc. Now they work hard looking for something to do and the few things they could be doing, are being done by the nurses. This would save a lot of money for the VA system

heparin infusions

Hanging a new bag of Heparin every time a rate change is ordered is a wasteful practice. Each bag costs $5.63 multiplied by the number of changes made per day. THis practice is also done with argatroban infusions. The cost of this infusion is $778.70.

Abusive behavior by upper management

Department of Veterans Affairs need to stop in the manner they are wasting millions of dollars by allowing upper management abusing the sytem for personal gains. For example cut back on EEO's complaints by monitoring in the manner Chiefs are getting away with their authority of power. One way of stopping or discontinue this practice is after 5 different complaints from 5 different employees for the same Chief's I believe... more »

Decrease costs and waste

At the VA Medical Center, we recently switched from having catheter bags that we attach to the indwelling catheter or Texas catheter, and now have these kits. Our facility doesn't have any of the stand-alone catheter bags anymore, so whenever we need a urine specimen and use a Texas catheter, or use a Texas catheter on someone who is incontinent, we have to open a whole CAUTI kit.

It seems like the solution would be... more »

Pharmacy Refills

Currently the VA mails out hundreds of thousands plastic prescription bottles to veterans. The majority are for refills. The old bottles are disposed of improperly and should be recycled by the VA to save money. Suggest enclosing another envelope the veteran can mail back empty bottles in to a central recycling location to be recycled for future use.

Travel

Require travel to be scheduled at least three weeks in advance to take advantage of the cheaper fares. This would not only save the government money, it would require training managers to be more proactive with training arrangements. Often times employees are only given a week to make flight arrangements

Title 38=/=Salary

Instead of giving furlough to government employees over the next year as proposed, I believe that a closer eye on hourly wages and overtime at ALL establishments would cut the budget immensely. We can talk all we want about “Fraud, Waste and Abuse”, but if we don’t look at it closer, it will continue rise.
Making Title 38 personnel salary straight across the board would be a start and “BILLION’s” would be saved.

No more Desktops, Thin Clients could be the answer

Tired of waiting for; IT support, work stoppages, computer upgrades, patch restarts, software loads, and worrying about if your information is being backed up. If so, “Thin Clients” could be the answer.

Current the VA spends millions of dollars in the purchase and/or lease of Personal Computers and support equipment, all of which require extra employees, setup, extra power usage, maintenance, software, software management,... more »
