Government ID Badges

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
It is a waste of government funds to have IT and Human Resource personnel out in the fields issuing ID badges to employees. They will always be behind the eight ball because employees are out on leave or in travel status. I suggest that DOL contract out this service. Maybe DOL can pattern itself after the driver license bureau because you can now renew license by mail. Since DOL just print new badges for reissues... more »

CRJ for Career Airmen, Soliders, Sailors and Marines

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
In order for the government to save money, I think Career Enlisted members should have to have an approved Career Job Registration (CJR) before being approved for military re-enlistment. This will get rid of non-productive workers and ensure all workers are earning their military paycheck. I have been in the military for 10 years and have encountered workers that do not pull their weight in the workplace. Everyone knows... more »

Converting some part-time positions to full-time

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Due to the nature of part-time work, we experience a high rate of turnover with Economic Assistants (EA). The cost of hiring and training a new EA is very high. (Sending them to training in Washington, DC, On-the-job training, certification). We have three survey's that a part-time EA needs to be trained on and it could take up to a year to fully train an EA. If we are able to convert at least some of the part-time positions... more »

Wage Hour technician

My suggestion is having a central location within each agency to procure office supplies from rather than the system we now have in place. It would be SUCH A TIME SAVER, WAGE SAVER, and COST REPORTING SAVER for all involved. There are presently approx 25 steps to searching and posting the item in a computer program, getting approval, find the item in the same program you originally located it, buying the item, posting... more »

Save Paper Towels

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
I see considerable paper towel waste at the Department of Labor, a problem that would apply to other agencies as well.

I try to pull out one or two paper towels from the dispenser and about one out of three times instead of one paper towel I get several, like six or eight. These excess paper towels fall into the trash bin below before I can catch them. And even if I do catch them, I won't need them all, and I can't... more »

Require all federal government travelers to inquire with their respective hotel whether they honor the Federal Exemption from state taxes. In most states, sales to federal, state and local governments are exempt from tax. Requiring inquiry by the traveler and following thru with completing the form could save millions of dollars in expense per year to the Federal Government.

Transit Subsidy Streamline and Auditing

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Over 300,000+ Federal Workers receive transit subsidy benefits. If we streamlined the way which we receive these subsidies, it could save the Federal Government a ton. To sign up for subsidies, you fill out an application with your route. Every month, you load this amount on your smart trip card or whatever local card is determined. This can be abused and workers or only required to re-certify each year, but our actual... more »

Time wasted erasing e-mails

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

We have very limited space on our server for e-mail. The result is that when large files are sent, one has to spend considerable time erasing or moving e-mails in order to send an e-mai. On the other hand, Gmail and other e-mail providers have almost unlimited space. Compare a couple hundred thousand kilobytes at work to 7,308 megabytes on my Gmail account. (I am sure the security issues can be worked out).

Keep the dim "summer" lights

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Pretty simple, actually, just keep the dimmed overhead lights in the hallways of government office buildings all year. If it's safe enough in the summer, why not safe enough all year long? Saves money and saves energy. I assume DOL is not the only office that would be "impacted" but ALL is not an option.

Consolidate HR offices

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
When we moved over from ESA to OWCP as our agency, we began receiving customer service for our Human Resource needs from OASAM. This has been more service oriented and the processing is much better than we received previously. The service is faster and friendlier and makes me as an employee feel important. In the past, I spent a lot of time wondering and following up with HR for paperwork or questions and now everything... more »

E2 contract revisited

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
We are required to use the online travel system, E2 (Carlson Wagonlit), for all of our travel reservations and to submit vouchers. Not only are we required to pay higher costs for airline tickets than we could find ourselves online, there are fees for EVERYTHING. If something happens last minute you have to pay an exorbitantly high fee to call an agent to change the reservation. If you have to change it again for another... more »
