Plain and Simple

Specifically change the way the government spends money instead of just cutting funding. We should not be rushed at the end of the fiscal year to spend all our extra money so we get more next year. If your branch of the military saves money at the unit levels it should be savings for years to come for that unit. If any unit/branch/service get into the red it should come out of their funds the next year. Let’s just cut... more »

Unrecovered SGLI Insurance Debt for Reserve and Natl Guard

The current unrecovered debt for DOD SGLI payments to Reservists and Natl Guard members who drill for points (all services) is nearly $20 million. Annual postage costs are nearly $20,000.

A number of Reserve and Natl Guard members from all services drill for points only (so their pay cannot be checked). Each service fronts money for these members to receive SGLI. DFAS sends out thousands of letters and other correspondence... more »

Ammo Allotment Based on Need not Usage

A much smaller and simpler version of the calls to change the incentive for departmental budgeting - essentially encourage the thrifty use of training ammunition. For military training commands, their allotment of training ammunition shrinks if they don't use all of their allotted ammunition, causing end-of-the-year "training" sessions that use up a lot of ammunition.

Rather than forcing units to use the ammo, simply... more »

Consolidate AF Inspections

Consolidate AF inspections (UCI, LCAP, ORI, MCCI) into 1 inspection and have 1-POC for the inspections. Also, many inspections (ORIs) are obsolete (cold war era thinking). These serve no purpose other than to have MAJCOMs and Wing Commanders get a "warm-fuzzy" that their folks could survive if a ficticious cold war were to happen.

Stop military units from wasting their annual funds.

Near the end of every fiscal year, many military units will push to spend the last of the year's funds. Sometimes this push is fully justified as the unit purchases much needed items. However, in many cases, the unit will unnecessarily spend the funds because: 1) not spending all their funds can result in them getting a smaller budget next year, 2) there is no reward for many of these units to save money, and 3) the combination... more »

An Idea From the Enlisted Perspective

President Obama,

Hello Sir. I read that the government is going to begin asking its employees to shut down their computers whenever they will be out of use after their work day is over. This is a great idea, except in the Air Force there are weekly security updates that shoot through their networks. If our computers are off, they won't get the needed security updates that we require in this day and age of hacking. I... more »

Deployed equipment packages

When maintenance units deploy to a location, their tools, testers, parts and servicing equipment are often packed up and deployed with them. But when it's time to replace that unit in the field, another unit packs up all of their items and deploys to replace the first unit. I don't understand why we couldn't leave the essential equipment here in the area of responsibility and just ship people and planes. I'm sure this... more »

Hotel Spending

The DHS/USCG spends huge amounts of money on providing hotel rooms for deploying the Deployable Operations Group MSST/MSRT units. If you take 50 members of just one unit and deploy them INCONUS and having two to a room that is 25 rooms that the Government has to pay for. If those 25 rooms are $100 dollars a night for a 30 day deployment the total is $75,000 and that is a rough easy number for one unit and there are 10... more »

Reduce military spending

The most obvious large expenditure full of waste is the military. Any serious effort at reducing the federal budget deficit and finding ways to save money has to start with the military.
If we quit fighting wars and closed military bases in other countries, we would save billions of dollars a year.
Most of the other ideas about saving money are just nickles and dimes compared to military spending. If we're serious about... more »
