Stop the waste in healthcare dollars

Twenty-eight (1972-2000) years practicing medicine in the US and eight (2000-2008) in Europe have taught me that we have a much better system than Europe both in terms of quality and proportional waste. Yet, our waste in healthcare is ruining this country. The root of the problem is that healthcare is “free”: once we pay our taxes, Medicare is going to take care of us. This year I will become Medicare eligible. And, although... more »

Complete Disability Payment Overhaul - Save Money Now!

Currently a disabled Veteran can receive disability benefits from 3 agencies - VA, DOD, and Social Security. Need to overhaul the disability payment systems to ensure that the right amount of payment is provided which is difficult since we have 3 agencies responsible to address the payments for our veterans. Why not only 1 agency - the VA manage all veterans disability payments. This will ensure Veterans receive accurate... more »

Save BILLIONS – Repeal DOMA

This is not a new social issue. Generations have had stable, non-traditional living arrangements. The Founding Fathers would want a tweak in federal law to promote efficiency, quality, simplicity, speed, & EQUITY. One simple change would put tens of thousands back into these households & the general economy. The IRS would feast on hundreds of thousands in “marriage penalties.” The welfare system would benefit by fewer... more »

Save BIG on Medicaid, Medicare, and FEHB Drug Costs

Why are pharmacies labeling medications with their own expiration dates for prescription medications rather than using the expiration dates set by the manufacturer? Not standardizing the expiration dates increases the risk of setting expiration dates that are before or after the manufacturers. I have personally seen many instances where pharmacy's expiration dates are six months to a year BEFORE the manufacturer's expiration... more »

5-Prong approach to Social Policy Change

Citizens do not want or need services cut and the middle class does not need tax increases. Here is my husband and I’s 5-prong approach to policy change that could significantly improve the country’s current financial situation: 1) Invest all Medicare and Social Security money contributed. This would allow growth and the possibility of long-term sustainment. 2) Temporarily cease sending U.S. dollars to aid foreign... more »

Medicare Deductible can be graduated, based on age

Recently retired folks tend to have larger pensions since they are based on more recent (therefore larger) salaries. They can therefore afford larger deductibles for medical care. As one gets older, the available funds become tighter as the 'fixed income' issue becomes more serious and inflation reduces the value of ones savings. Smaller deductibles are more important for this group. One size never has fit all, and... more »

Closeout language in application remarks

For Medicare only applications, we must send a close out notice to the applicant reminding them that they only filed for Medicare and not Retirement benefits. We could eliminate these additional close out letters by adding the closeout language to the remarks section of the appication instead of sending a seperate close out letter.

Medical savings

A recent news item states that the government will pay half of all Americans' medical costs within the next decade. I work with SSA disability decisions all day. Drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and obesity are elements of the majority of disability claims, even those that are denied. It's time to approach these three impairments the way smoking was approached. If the government spends a little money now persuading people... more »

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays out $4.6 BILLION in improper and fraudulent benefits annually.

The Department of Veterans Affairs loses $800 MILLION annually on improper and fraudulent payments.

And the FRAUD list goes on and on and on, totaling OVER $100 BILLION PER YEAR!!!

1ST...I suggest that we include the statement... more »

Mandate Medicade coverage When not Medicaid Eligible

Currently if you are less than 2 years from your entitlement date and under 65 you cannot get into medicare. Some receive too much in benefits (due to contributions from payroll) they are disquailified for Medicaid through the state. The new "high risk pools" require a six month waiting period. This is just long enough to bankrupt middle income households.

Medicare alerts SSA when no claims filed in 24 mos over age 80

Medicare should send an alert to the Social Security Administration when they have a claimant over the age of 80 that has not used their Medicare in 24 months. When Medicare alerts SSA that no claims have been filed, SSA can verify if the beneficiary is still alive or if there is fraud occuring. Currently SSA has a "Centurnarian Project" where we investigate or verify the life of any beneficiary claiming benefits over... more »

Put an end to "use it or lose it funding"

All federal agencies I've been involved with go through the same thing at the end of every fiscal year - a huge spending spree, many times on items not needed, to spend down money before it is swept away. A big reason for this is fear that the budget requests for the following year may not be approved if the agency did not spend it's entire budget in the current year.
This is wasteful spending of money. The so called... more »
