Drive Share Program

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Institute a voluntary drive share program. Employees can anonymously enter their locations on a virtual map so that those near each other can easily connect via a software program. Work hours can also be posted to coordinate times. The program would even have the ability to coordinate so that one could travel in with one person and travel home with another. This would save on gas and wear and tear on vehicles resulting... more »

On longer term temporary duty overseas (TDY), the US Government is paying a very high daily rate for apartments that are rented long term. When I was in the UK the daily rate was 155 pounds/day. It makes more sense to rent long term and pay a monthly rental rate, not a daily rate that a hotel might charge. In addition, I received over $160/day for food. This also seems quite high for a long-term temporary duty.

Save over $500 million annually limit exec. air travel

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
I have noticed over the years that there has been alot of military airlift missions from our Command. The travel is mostly going from Norfolk, VA to Washington, D.C. Which is roughly a 45 minute flight, as opposed to a 3 hour drive. That is great for time savings, but not financial savings.

I noticed some flight orders with the expenses listed for the air travel. Usually between $11K and $12K a flight, so round trip... more »

Eliminate dubious travel

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
On occasion, government travel is scheduled for employees to meet at non-government (e.g. hotels) sites to conduct business with their government peers. This should be eliminated. GSA has already leased buildings to the government, so therefore, the meetings should occur on the grounds of the federal property that is leased to the Department/Bureau/Agency. Offsite meetings tend to be an excuse for going on a vacation... more »

Tele-Job Interviews

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Allow applicants from anywhere to be able to interview from anywhere! Use the internet to connect interviewers and interviewees face to face with a simple webcam. This would allow for someone in Alaska to interview for a job in Washington DC. This would save travel costs and give us a wider applicant pool.

Reduce travel for awards ceremonies

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
My idea is for federal agencies to conduct awards ceremonies at their home facilities, rather than flying employees to the Washington DC area for awards ceremonies.

Since I became a federal employee, I have received two awards for which I was invited to fly to Washington DC for a ceremony; the ceremonies were each attended by dozens of other award recipients from around the country as well as a guest for each employee.... more »

Modernizing DAU Online Course Delivery

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
I have never been a fan of online courses, particularly ones where a student simply clicks through a set of slides. However, online course delivery has evolved into a format that is not only cheaper, but one which can actually provide a higher-quality learning experience than a traditional classroom.

Universities around the world are now providing virtual classrooms for their students. I encourage you to view MIT’s free... more »

Change flight booking requirements for all DoD chartered flights

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Recently, Airline companies changed their policy to one checked bag only, when reserving a flight.
This has caused a drastic increase in overall fees for travel. When travelling on American Airlines, and probably other companies, this is causing a 100-300 dollar markup.
For those at overseas locations, this can literally double the cost. For instance, on a recent trip through USAFE, I incurred a 400 Euro fee for my... more »

Incentive to save money on lodging

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

I propose that if federal employees choose to stay somewhere cheaper than the GSA lodging rate in that area, they are able to keep 50% of their savings. This policy should still apply if the employee chooses to stay with friends/family for free, in which case they should still be reimbursed for half the GSA lodging rate.

Travelling Labs for Rural, Remote and Homeless Veterans

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
To reduce beneficial travel and burden on our Veterans, as well as increase the number of Veterans getting needed labs that are currently unable to develop a small fleet of equipped RV's staffed by Provider, Nurse, and Clerk/Driver to visit rural areas, KOA campgrounds, homeless shelters on a scheduled basis. Much like the idea of the bookmobile. These RV would be linked to the patients record systems and the veterans... more »
