Paperwork reduction

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

As a complement to the Electronic Official Personnel Folder system- rather than having me print out each document to provide to my Administrative Officer, they should be able to access all of my information so that a paper copy is not required at my office for each document.

Additionally, leave forms should be able to be submitted online with the use of electronic signatures rather than printing these out every time.

Incentive for Self Move Relocation When Changing Gov't Jobs

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
It should be obvious to everyone that renting a U-Haul and moving yourself is a much cheaper option than spending enormous amounts of money to have professional moving companies move household goods when federal employees transfer to a new duty station. The governemnt should offer to cover the costs associated with moving your possesions yourself along with a cash incentive for doing so. The self moving costs even with... more »

Reduce software expenses with open source software and standards

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Currently, the U.S. government spends in excess of $1 billion annually to license software -- software that produces documents that are difficult to access after a few years because the new version of the software often doesn't work with the older documents. Since the document formats are proprietary, we have no way to access these documents other than by maintaining the unsupported older software. This has made transparency... more »

Eliminate paper licenses- Waste of money

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Currently for credentialing and privileging purposes, all licenses must be verified before completing an application which is usually done online as primary source verification which is acceptable by the Joint Commission. Then within 5 days a written license request has to be mailed. Usually the state licensing boards require a fee, some as high as $50 per license verification. And our office has never gained any additional... more »

Use travel money saved by this idea on other things

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

When traveling, if an employee has a friend or relative in the area where they are visiting, allow the employee to stay with the friend or relative and save on the hotel room & per diem. The agency then can use the money saved for other things (my office constantly runs out of postage the last week of September, for example).

State Magazine is published monthly. The purpose of the magazine is “to facilitate communication between management and employees at home and abroad and to acquaint employees with developments that may affect operations or personnel”.

All Department of State employees are required to have email accounts. The publication should be “Digital” only. Paper copies are delivered to our cubicles/offices religiously each month... more »

Replace $1 notes with $1 coins and SAVE BILLIONS

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Although the news is filled with distractions like the cost to the Fed to house unused $1 coins and how Americans don't "like" $1coins because they are heavy and easily confused with quarters, I would suggest we look at this issue with common sense and practicality for the sake of our nation. An impartial GAO study update this year determined that billions could be saved over time if we replace single $1 notes with $1... more »

Consolidation of CBP and TSA Bonded Facility and Cargo Operation

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Prior to the creation of the DHS, the former US Customs Service was the primary entity for inspecting inbound and outbound foreign cargo at US International airports as well as compliance and control of related bonded facilities.

The events of September 11, 2001 resulted in the creation of DHS as well as the TSA with the consolidation of the Customs Service into CBP. Since 2001 the TSA has grown and expanded in mission... more »

Reduction of the Workweek 7 hour days

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The Federal Government should reduce work schedules to 7 hours a day instead of 8. This would equal 10 hours less per pay period. Multiply that by approximately 2.15 million employees = $$$$$$ in savings. This measure will result in huge savings in payroll costs while avoiding layoffs.

The reduction in salary may not be significant to create a burden on the employee (better fewer hours than no job at all). In addition,... more »

Do not provide "better" furniture to higher-level employees

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Higher-level employees, managers, supervisore, SES folks do not NEED higher-quality furniture (real oak, etc.). Make them get the same standard furniture as all government employees. Of course, they may need different furniture, or more, depending on their position, but not better.

Rollover Budget Initiative (RBI)

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The Rollover Budget Initiative (RBI) would allow units to maintain their annual budgets without being penalized for not fully utilizing the last year’s budget. Any remaining money from a fiscal year would be the base amount for the next fiscal year, which will then have additional money added to meet the unit’s requested budget. For example, if a unit requests $10,000 and has $2,000 left over from the previous year, that... more »
