Certified Nurse Practioners - Hire more in the Government

Certified Family Nurse Practitioners (CFNP), Certified Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (CWHNP), and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) are an underutilized and highly skilled segment of the health care industry that should be used more in the federal government.

The American Medical Association and other special interest groups have a strong incentive not to legitimize this noble profession. Popular culture has lead... more »

Create Self-Plus-One option for Federal Healthcare Benefits

How many federal employees would benefit from a Self-Plus-One option for health care? Young couples, single parents, empty-nesters? How much money would the federal government save from paying lower premiums? OPM says that creating this option would not generate enough revenue to cover high-risk (elderly) members benefits however, if it's possible for the dental and vision programs to offer a self-plus-one option (which... more »

Stop Minting Penny and Nickel

Call it the Small Change Act, the most a person would ever have to contribute on a single transaction would be 9 cents.

I once read that the cost of making the penny and nickel, both outweigh the actual value of the coin.

My proposal is similar to what some banks are starting to offer, in a keep the change program.

On all *CASH* purchases, the total price, after sales tax, would be rounded up to the nearest amount,... more »

Surtax corn used for junk food and subsidize Fruits & Vegetables

Most junk food is made from corn byproducts. Most junk food is also cheaper to purchase than healthier food options (like fruits and vegetables). This is not a coincidence. Corn is cheap because it is subsidized by the government. Thus, the government is indirectly lowering the price of junk food at the supermarket by subsidizing corn.

The corn subsidy to farmers should not be reduced or eliminated. Instead, surtax equal... more »

Enact Confict of Interest Laws for Medical Practioners

Federal employees are barred from investing in stocks, etc. where they have even the appearance of a conflict. Congress should enact similar laws for medical practitioners. They should be barred (legally) from accepting benefits from Pharmaceutical companies that may influence their prescribing practices. Many physicians are likely to prescribe high cost new drugs because of compensation from the drug industry. The high... more »

Reduce Federal Health Care Costs by Not Serving Unhealthy Food

USG contributions to employee health insurance costs are massive and could be reduced by having a healthier workforce. A healthier workforce would mean lower premiums and USG contributions. One available means by which the federal government could easily promote health it its workforce and thereby reduce health expenditures--without changing health benefits--is to only sell healthy food at federal buildings (cafeterias,... more »

Eliminate lifetime Congressional pensions and health care

Being a member of Congress is NOT something that should be considered a 'career' from which one 'retires'. Therefore, there should be NO government pension or lifetime health care for any former member of Congress (and no time in service exception that might encourage longevity in office). These people already get to keep any money left over in their campaign funds when they leave Congress. In many cases, that's millions... more »

Health Care Reform

This addresses an American physician shortage, high unemployment of well educated citizens, the need for cost effective medical care for Americans and the inability of many to pay for graduate tuition costs. Each medical school and college that receives any financial aid, should be required to make a certain allotment of classroom seats available to citizens admitted as civilian-government medical students. Those students... more »

Bill foreign countries for expenses incurred by their citizens

The U.S. gives aid to almost every country in the world in one way or another. If a foreign citizen uses U.S. services without paying -- hospitalization and medical care at the top of the list -- hospitals etc. should send the bill to the State Dept which would bill the appropriate country. If the bill is not paid within 30 days it is withheld from their foreign / military aid and the State Dept should repay the hospital/institution... more »

Stop Selling Cigarettes and Tobacco

Cigarettes and other Tobacco products have no known health benefits. Their use by military members has no benefit and works against many other savings-related priorities such as healthcare for active and retired personnel.

The DOD should prohibit the sale of tobacco products on all of its installations, especially outside of combat zones. It will take a long time to eradicate tobacco use from the military, but it is... more »
