Put Solar on All Government Roofs when built or repaired

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Roofing Projects for new government buildings and for Repairing existing government buildings is expensive, but it would Save a lot of money over time if we added Solar Panels at the same time as roof work is being contracted. The installation costs would be reduced greatly and the electrical savings would more than make up for the smaller construction cost over time and would lower our dependence on energy. It would... more »

Sustainable Government IDs from Recycled Plastic

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The government spends thousands to millions of dollars making plastic IDs for their government employees each year. When these IDs expire or their beholder leaves his/her position, they are then tossed into the trashed and disposed as waste; waste destined to sit in a landfill. Why not recycle them? By making IDs out of recycled plastic and then recycling the IDs themselves after use, the government could not only increase... more »

Stop Printing Leave and Earning Statements

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

The Human Resources shared service centers, should stop printing and mailing Leave and earnings statements. This could save all government agencies more than 5,000,000. (500,000 times the number of shared service providers 5).

The Leave and Earnings statements could be pulled down by the employee every pay period that they wanted them.

A simple green idea that could save millions

Onfile Archive for Office of Grants Management

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Recently the Office of Head Start launched its Head Start Enterprise System (HSES). It's a great green tool for OHS and its grantees, allowing us to share files through a singular source.

I propose a similar tool for the Office of Grants Management. Rather than mailing hard copies to the Regional Office, grantees can simply upload documents for OGM to archive accordingly. This would reduce filing, use of stationary,... more »

Lights-Out + Timed Lights

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Replace standard light switches with automatic timer switches in part-time-use areas like break rooms, restrooms, copy rooms, etc. The energy savings will pay for the cost of the upgraded hardware quickly.

Make "lights-out" the default configuration for buildings, instead of "lights-on." When Security 'opens' a building for the day, *only* turn on lights needed for safety or in major traffic areas, leaving employees... more »

Power-saving policies

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
In order to conserve electricity (and therefore operating costs), as many items as possible should be powered down when not in use. Office lights should have timers/motion sensors installed that turn them off after a certain period of inactivity. Printers can be powered down at the end of the day (or when they are not in use - sometimes I use my printer only a few times a week). Scanners should remain powered off and... more »

Standardize Fleet Management

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Standardize the management of our vehicle and equipment fleets. Currently, each agency, writes policy/regulation and has software, procedures, and management policy for their fleets. Conversely, we're all doing the same thing; tracking utilization, right-sizing, greening, tracking fuel, training, etc. On top of that, each agency is writing directives, regulations, policy, and even creating separate forms. Standardizing... more »

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Revamp system such that:

1- Partial-rolls of toilet paper are not discarded into the trash by cleaning staff for the convenience of installing a new roll.

2- Recycle bins are installed in bathrooms for paper towels only (The vast majority of paper towels are used to dry clean hands and then discarded. These could be recylcled.)

3- Or, switch to hand air dryers.

Change Building Temperatures

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Require warmer facility temperatures in summer and cooler facility temperatures in winter. Encourage people to dress appropriately for the season. Most facilities could change their temperatures a degree or two with little difference in occupant comfort. Over the entire federal government a huge cost savings can be recognized. Unoccupied spaces can be adjusted more significantly.

Turn off computer monitors at night.

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Turn off computer monitors at night. Computer monitors can always be turned off at night. Computer upgrades can occur with monitor screens switched off. Leaving computer monitors on at all times is a huge waste of energy and dollars. It is completely unneccessary!! Let's save those dollars! Let's save that energy! It will also cut our greenhouse gas emissions!
