Why pay an airline $300 for a flight that takes twice as long as one that costs $150? I understand buying the more expensive ticket to get reimbursal in case of a cancellation, but don't employees generally use the flight?

If I can fly out of a closer airport, at a cheaper price, I should be able to do so. I cannot understand why GSA will mandate me to drive 1.5 hrs to another airport, pay more for the flight, AND pay for parking? It's an absurd practice that needs to be stopped immediately.

Overseas we are forced to use only US airline carriers or their equivalent for TDY. In Germany this means Miles and More partners of which United is a partner. These airlines are the most expensive. The inability to use other options cost the government to use more expensive flights. The ability to use other, cheaper airlines is not possible with this policy.

The IRS requires approximately 65,000 employees who travel at least once per year to acquire and use a Citibank government credit card for official travel. Travel is funded through a centralized billing account (CBA) for employees with low credit scores or history of misuse.

The amount of money spent on federal employee travel could be greatly reduced. The "government rate" for airfare and car rental far exceeds what is available to the general public. I do not see a legitimate reason why the government should be purchasing fully refundable airfare. The cost is typically more than double.
