We in Chicago are fortunate to be surrounded by many Federal buildings housing many different agencies. We were able to participate in an office supply trade with other agencies in the area. It's amazing what supplies some agencies provide. It was like a shopping spree!! As summer interns in the Region 9 office of the Environmental Protection Agency, it has been exciting to see that EPA practices what it preaches! One of the best sustainability initiatives in the San Francisco office is to replace personal trash bins with larger bins in communal areas of each floor. This simple act saves money, reduces landfill waste, and gently encourages recycling.

Many industries have saved money by adopting a zero waste goal (example: Toyota). Choose one agency (EPA) to pilot an apporach to zero waste by removing all trash containers from desk areas and adding recycling along with centralized trash cans.
