Eliminate paper licenses- Waste of money

Currently for credentialing and privileging purposes, all licenses must be verified before completing an application which is usually done online as primary source verification which is acceptable by the Joint Commission. Then within 5 days a written license request has to be mailed. Usually the state licensing boards require a fee, some as high as $50 per license verification. And our office has never gained any additional... more »

Require greater oversight of transit benefits

Some government employees abuse their transit benefits -- for example, someone who receives a transit benefit that fully covers the cost of vanpooling may only use the vanpool one day a week or less. In my area, that cost would work out to a cost to the government of over $20 for each day this employee chooses to use the transit benefit. There should be a standard policy in effect that stipulates what percentage of... more »

Shut off unused lights and equipment during off hours

Many times over the weekend at federal facilities the lights and computers remain on. The cost savings would be enormous if we can encourage people to shut the power off and get engineering to power down the central controlled electricity on unused floors.

Decrease Water Pressure = Decrease in overhead

I have been to a few VA facilities since I started working at the VA 2 years ago and I have noticed the exact same thing in every woman's restroom I used. As soon as I turn on the water I feel like like skin will be blasted off of my hands.

My solution. At each sink in the facility turn down the amount of water by 1/4 or 1/2 a turn for both the hot and cold water. This will greatly reduce the amount of water consumption.... more »

Recycling in the VA Medical Centers

There should be recycling bins for cans and bottles in the cafeterias and vending areas. In New Jersey, there are none, and I would guess that there are many other VA Medical Centers around the country that do not have this in place either.

Also, in the offices and clinics, there does not seem to be a paper recycling process, with the exception of the shredder boxes. There is a significant amount of paper that can be... more »

Send VA Letters Electronically

Each Day, The Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) sends thousands of letters to veterans and their dependents. The current system mandates hard copy letters to every veteran.

With the advent of electronic mail (e-mail), and Secretary Shinseki's goals to transform VA into a 21st Century organization, eliminating the claims backlog by 2015, I suggest that optional e-mail communication between veterans and VA be established.... more »

Shipping Items Timely to Prevent Overnight Shipping Costs

Even with advances in automation, federal agencies still need to ship out a lot of items everyday. There are deadlines established for most shipments.

Rather than waiting until the last minute to ship something, federal agencies should be mandated to ship immediately upon notification of the need for shipment.

This would save millions of federal dollars by preventing unnecessary overnight costs that many agencies incur... more »

Government of the People, By the People, For the People

These words were spoken by Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. Here we are in the United States 147 years, 260 days later.

We are watching Congress. At this second, we are $14,546,716,998,177 in debt. It took me 6 seconds to type that number, and the debt raised $262,554(Over 260 THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!) while I was typing.

We have to get a handle on our spending in the Federal Government.... more »

Use Both Sides of the Paper...Double Your Inventory!

Although we are trying to automate the Federal Government, there are still many times we have to use paper.

When employees print, use duplex printing!

When employees take notes, write on both sides!

If the Agency distributes monthly Posters to hang up in the building, print 2 months at a time. Flip the poster over after the first month.

When an employee gives a presentation, use the "white space" on each side of... more »

Wasting 500cc IV minibags - RN

We should eliminate hanging the 500cc minibags of normal saline when infusing an IV antibiotic, for patients that receive IV antibiotics daily or one time a new 500cc bag of NS is hung and changed daily. On most occasions not even 10CC of NS is being used and the unused NS gets thrown away. We already flush the PIV and PICC before and after with either 3ml or 10ml of NS so why are we even hanging the minibags. Why... more »
