Saving on overtime

To my surprise a government employee can call in sick on Monday, work a double on Tuesday and collect overtime for that shift even though his total number of actual work hours is only 40. I know that this will be met with great resistance, but the amount of money and time used astonishes me. At the same time to cover that sick shift someone else will get overtime?

Inmate Pay is a waist of $$ Paper 2.6 million copies each year

1. Paper waist 2.6 million pieces a year

I work for the Bureau of Prisons and we currently have 217,000 inmates all of which are required to work a job. Every month we calculate pay on the computer for the inmates and every month we print pay sheets. So that is 217,000 pieces of paper every month, 2,604,000 pieces of paper every year and the number is growing. Which is just a waist of paper not including the ink... more »

BOP Commissary Crunch

The Bureau of Prisons has approximately 183 institutions with approximately 177,000 inmates. We move inmates throughout the Bureau and ship the inmate’s property utilizing United Parcel Service (UPS). The Bureau of Prisons does get a discount on the shipping cost however, the inmates are authorized to ship commissary goods mostly perishables such as soups, rice, candy, etc. The cost to ship these commissary items... more »

Relationship Skills/Conflict Management Seminars

Studies have shown that poor relationships often lead to poor performance. Create seminars to help employees enhance their relationship skills (e.g. conflict management, how to foster positive relationships, etc.). This could be taught by federally employed mental health professionals at little or no cost.
