Expand Idea Competition to Department Level

Based on the success of the President's SAVE Award, this approach should be replicated within Departments, such as at the Department of Energy, as a way for employees to suggest institutional innovation and to vote on one another's ideas. This could include ideas to save money, promote Department efficiency and effectiveness, enhance transparency, and promote broader engagement with the American people.

One great way... more »

Employees Training Employees

I think reducing costs spent by the Government can come from the reduction of private-sector training companies, training federal employees. Each class that is brought in, costs the Government $800-$1500 per person per class, totaling $20,000 - $30,000 per course for 25 people. These courses are taught by people who have been out of the government for years, and some of the information isn't relevant to some jobs around... more »

Build Refineries / Distillers

In the recent past, Americans have been at the mercy of oil refiners shutting down refineries for maintenance or storms. These supply disruptions have increased energy costs to all Americans.

It also adds to the distrust of oil and energy suppliers. This complicates further agreement on any energy policy.

The government should build three to four oil refineries across the country. These refineries should be widely... more »

Green Trash Disposal for Federal Buildings

Recently I came upon a green way to dispose trash that may help the federal government save money on tipping fees (hauling, disposal, and landfills costs), while helping to generate supplemental electricity and heat for its buildings. GOING GREEN

With our world today, our natural resources are diminishing, and we are trying to do what we can to reserve them.
Solar panels could be built, and save money spent on energy throughout time. Small solar panels can power small things throughout our facilities, if the government does not want to spend millions on huge solar panels. A great way to promote going green could be installing solar panels on the GEMS (Green Environmental... more »

Reduce Drinking Fountain Water and Energy Waste

This is a simple idea, but I think it can make a big impact if implemented across the Federal government. I am a graduate intern and am quite busy right now (work, thesis, etc.) so I have not been able to further research this idea, unfortunately. I think the analysis is worth doing, though, and would happy to assist with such research in the future. So here is my idea:

Water drinking fountains are wasteful; unless... more »
