Employee Sharing of Travel Savings

It is time to encourage employees to save on travel expenses by sharing a percentage of the savings they have on their travel. Use the average price of hotels, rental cars and air travel for TDY location and give the employee a percentage (say 10 or 20 percent) of the amount they save the government. By doing this, the Government could develop a culture of looking for the best price and most savings.

Savings on Training

The cost of training each and every employee is extremely high and I believe that there is a better, more cost efficient way of doing things. Currently, the Government sends each employee to their required training, paying for their flight, hotel and per diem. For a two week course, this can easily be $5000 per person. If there are 20 people in this class, then the cost is $100,000 plus the cost of the instructors... more »

Single Monitors

I love having two monitors on my desk so that I can work on a Word document and look at an Excel spreadsheet at the same time. But come on... if the Government is looking for ways to save money, that's a pretty easy place to start. Just limit everyone to a single monitor. The dual monitors are convenient but let's not be greedy.

Extend Time Between TS Clearance Reinvestigations

Currently, an individual with a TS clearance must be completely reinvestigated every five years. This is an expensive and time consuming process that has provided little benefit in rooting out potential spies, terrorists, etc. My suggestion is to do a full reinvestigation every ten years and every five years do just a police and financial records check. This will reduce the manpower and time required and save the government... more »

Automatic computer shutdown and restart.

I recommend installing hardware or software that allows the user to determine the time of day their computers would automatically shutdown and restart. Too often I see computers around our office that have been left on overnight and through the weekends. This has the potential to save over 66% in computer energy use (16 hours a day off, plus weekends).

Eliminate pagers and work phones

The pager system especially for physciains is an outdated system that no longer serves a purpose especially when almost all of us have cellular phones or smartphones. Eliminate the pager system and work phones and allow employees to use their own mobile phones.

SharePoint Saves!!!

All governmental organizations either currently have or are in the process of activating a SharePoint online Virtual Work Environment (VWE). More impetus needs to be placed on activation and utilization of these environments in an effort to truly 'do more with less' as well as creating a capability to implement their mandated telework capabilities and paper work reduction mandates. This one system will allow every organization... more »

Stop Paying Twice for Windows

We buy computers from Dell. Each computer comes with a license from Microsoft. (Sticker with license key) We then buy an Enterprise license to install Windows (any version) on that computer. Dell sells computers without Windows. We can buy our computers without Microsoft licenses, and then install our Enterprise software. (Volume Licensing)

We never use the preinstalled version, and we never use the license key we pay... more »

Automate DD2875 (SAAR) Process Across DoD

Automating this process across DoD (and perhaps all Fed Gov't agencies) will not only streamline more effecient business practices (cross agency) but will save thousands of man hours per year. The current process allows for digitally signed DD2875s, but when an organization is requesting thousands of employee accesses to a system, emailing is not an option. Mailing is slow and requires money and resources. An automated... more »

A Simple Idea That Is Easy To Implement

I propose that when military members are sent TDY they be required to share quarters or hotel rooms with one other member, providing they do not have to share the same bed, are of equal rank and the same gender.

When my unit was sent on a mission for a few weeks, we stayed at a hotel and each member got their own room which was equipped with two beds. My brother, also in my unit, was sent TDY with us and we decided to... more »

Reduce Printing Through Visibility and Accountability

The US Government wastes millions of dollars on unnecessary printing by Federal employees. Not only are paper, toner, and printer maintenance expensive, but storage, destruction, and time searching through hard-copies costs money.

We need to use the print servers to track and report usage by user/branch/department/command. By shining a light on current and historical usage, users will adjust their habits and save money.... more »

We just held a recent IG audit and the auditor asked if you had 1 single thing that could improve our organization what... more »

Automate the Design Change Notice (DCN) Process

Currently, to put a new part into the Navy Supply System we have to use a form called a Design Change Notice. Currently only Manual DCNs are accepted. This process currently requires the submission of a Word document which frequently gets returned by Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) WSS (Weapon Systems Support) due to transcription errors or incorrectly entered information. The time wasted filling out, re-filling... more »
