Single Online Education Resource

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Combine the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard online training programs into a single web-enabled entity.
Having multiple agencies and organizations manage the education of our combat personnel is inefficient and highlights the disparity and unfocused attempts the different services take on online education. It is simply a waste of time and money to break up online education into different areas for... more »

Budget planning and cuts

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Throughout the time I have worked for DOD I have seen so many ways that money is being wasted.
Shops and codes have a set amount of money a year they can spend on for their budget. Some spend it all at once, which doesn't work well, because when it gets close to the end of the fiscal year, they have run out of many items and don't have the money in their budget to get more, or they have to borrow money. Then other's... more »

Eliminate Air Force Fitness Assessment Cell

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The Air Force is paying civilians to conduct bi-annual fitness testing of military members. This shows a complete lack of confidence in the integrity of Airman and is a serious waste of resources. Immediately stand down the fitness assessment cells and return fitness testing responsibility to military members. We can control nuclear weapons but can't be trusted to count push-ups? Does anyone else see a problem with this?... more »

P.M.S! - PRIORITIZE MONEY SPENT!

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Something that I have noticed in my 2 yrs of civil service is that the government spends so much money on office supplies. For example ordering document protectors @ $25/for a box of 50 is ridiculous when you can get them from places like Office Depot @ $10/for a box of 50. That highlighter that you are using cost the government about $8/9 for a box of 6, when it could have been purchased for $3/$4 for a box of 6 at Office... more »

Reduce TDYs

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Many TDYS (temporary duty assignments) are boondoggles and waste substantial amounts of money. It would behoove the DOD to scrutinize all TDYs to see if they are necessary and if not - reward employees/finance offices for giving up superflous travel rather than penalize them with less money the following year if they don't use all funds available annually.

High Effiency Hand Dryers

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
High Efficiency hand dryers should be required by all federal agencies in order to save significant amounts of money on janitorial services contracts as well as maintain compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The use of automatic hand dryers can significantly reduce the amount of paper towels used in public restrooms, which can lead to significant reductions in operating cost, waste, and the overall impact... more »

Save billions by using military instead of contractors

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The Government pays contractors billions of dollars to do installation projects that could be accomplaished by assets that are already in place! I work in the Telecommunications field and have deployed twice to Iraq and Afghanistan to install communications on bases there. I also went to Iraq for 1 year as a contractor. I made more money in the one year as a contractor (over 170k) than I did the other 2 combined! And... more »

Civilian DOD Full-Time Air Reserve Technicians

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
I love my career in the USAF Reserves. As a full-time Air Reserve Technician the past two years we've been ordered to wear our part-time Reserve uniforms as DoD Civil Service employees daily. This is costing the USA government at 5 million dollars annually. Not to mention the yearly cash awards to other officers to maintain dress and appearance standards daily. Please consider giving this money back to the USA tax... more »

Government Overspending

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
The US Governemnt pays top dollar on everything that they purchase. WHY!? We buy most things in bulk and you would think that we would get it for a cheaper price but we don't. Stop the useless overspending. I am an aircraft mechanic for the DoD and US Air Force Reserves. when we pay $250,000.00 for a winch it's getting a little ridiculous or $70,000.00 for a windshield, or even $5.00 bot a 10 cent bolt. Needless to say... more »

Stop helping everyone else and help OURSELVES!!

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

The US is willing to spend our hard earned tax dollars helping other countries that don't even want to help themselves. It's time to stop paying foreign aid and save that money until we can turn our debt around. Once we get our debt under control we can revisit the idea of wasting our money on other countries.

Government Cooperation

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
This idea is for all government agencies and all supply managers. I would welcome comments.

To help promote cross agency cooperation and save money, create a .gov website similar to Craigslist that agencies requisition for excess property and material in a local area. Why should one agency buy new items, like desks or chairs, when another agency has excess material in a local area? After the item has been listed for... more »

Promote dollar coin use at AAFES, Commisary, NX, Clubs, etc.

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
See related suggested listed below for more info.

US dollar coins are being stored. They are not circulating. Dollar coins are cheaper in the long run than paper one dollar bills.

Have the PX, BX, comissary, Marine exchange, clubs in the Morale and Welfare system, etc. Start each day with a specifiec minimum of dollar coins in their "bank", "drawer", "tray" or what ever the enterprise calls the money availalbe... more »

SAVE MILLIONS PER YEAR BY ELIMINATING WASTED BAH!

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
There are over 30K mil couples (one mil member married to another) on active duty in the USAF. Both spouses are receiving untaxed Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH). One of the member’s is receiving BAH at the “single” rate (i.e. they have a spouse and/or child) rate, while the other is also receiving BAH at the “single” rate. This is obviously necessary, if they are stationed in separate locations. However, if they are... more »

Each year, on the anniversary date of the enlisted military member, they recieve a clothing allowance. Based upon the branch of service and sex of the member, they recieve between 388.80 - 608.40. (www.military.com)

As of 31 May 2011, the Department of Defense had 1,182,849 enlisted members worldwide from all services. (DoD Personnle and military casualty statistics)
