Employee Sharing of Travel Savings

It is time to encourage employees to save on travel expenses by sharing a percentage of the savings they have on their travel. Use the average price of hotels, rental cars and air travel for TDY location and give the employee a percentage (say 10 or 20 percent) of the amount they save the government. By doing this, the Government could develop a culture of looking for the best price and most savings.

Extend Time Between TS Clearance Reinvestigations

Currently, an individual with a TS clearance must be completely reinvestigated every five years. This is an expensive and time consuming process that has provided little benefit in rooting out potential spies, terrorists, etc. My suggestion is to do a full reinvestigation every ten years and every five years do just a police and financial records check. This will reduce the manpower and time required and save the government... more »

Stop Giving Closing Government Facilities to Cities for Free

Currently, DoD turns over for free (after paying all the clean-up costs) all military bases and facilities that are being closed. The local jurisdiction, in turn, sells the property to a developer for millions if not billions. (Walter Reed being a prime example. Under the current procedures DoD and the taxpayer will see nothing from the sale of the property). DoD should be able to sell the property directly to a developer... more »

Sell Naming Rights to Federal Buildings/Facilities

The Federal Government can do the same thing the sports world discovered some time ago - sell naming rights to non-major Federal Buildings/facilities. In other words, not the Pentagon, White House, Capitol, or Supreme Court (etc), but Federal Buildings on military bases and in towns across the country. Naming would have to be tasteful, for set period, without any special logos, and should include the name of any individual... more »

Fund the Necessities

All departments, agencies, etc. should come up with a list of: 1) What they have to have; 2) What they could really use to do their job well; and 3) What would be nice to have (it may make life easier, but it is not a necessity) and funding should be relayed and dispersed in accordance with those lists. If the government is running short on money, the items on the "nice to have" list will simply have to wait. Perhaps... more »

Save over $500 million annually limit exec. air travel

I have noticed over the years that there has been alot of military airlift missions from our Command. The travel is mostly going from Norfolk, VA to Washington, D.C. Which is roughly a 45 minute flight, as opposed to a 3 hour drive. That is great for time savings, but not financial savings.

I noticed some flight orders with the expenses listed for the air travel. Usually between $11K and $12K a flight, so round trip... more »

Wasteful spending - "Use it or Lose it" mentality

As the debt ceiling date of Aug 2nd approaches, Congress and head officials are arguing over how to resolve the crisis. At the same time, across the federal government employees are gearing up for the end of the fiscal year with their money burning holes in their pockets. Supervisors are walking around the office trying to come up with ideas on how to spend money, from travel to new paintings to spice up their offices.... more »

Federal Government buys local

The White House could develop a program which promotes and encourages Federal Agencies to source products and services from the local community whenever possible if the products/services are available at a competitive market price. The Agencies would see a cost savings by reducing the amount of money spent on freight and shipping of items and the distance federal employees must travel to meet with vendors. There would... more »

Change Fiscal Year Spending Policies

Being in the military, I have seen the way the fiscal year spending policies currently in place have affected missions, causing us to be unable to purchase items that we need in a timely manner. Yet when it comes to the end of the fiscal year, we rush out to spend money on new flat screen TV's among other things just to insure our budget for next year isnt cut.

From what I have read, MANY other departments have this... more »

GET OUT of Commercial Leases---All Federal Agencies

Per a May 6, 2011 article by Gregory Korte in USA Today, titled Proposal Addresses Property Disposal:

"The Whte House released a list of 12,218 federal properties that are going unused.".

Many Government Agencies pay rent for high cost, commercial property, while Government-owned facilities in close proximity are vacant or not fully utilized. The Federal Government should produce a lease consolidation plan to get... more »

Make all Federal Government facilities non-tobacco campuses

Restaurants, bars, hospitals, school campuses, state offices, other business have gone NO SMOKING. Smoking causes: dependency, cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bad breath, yellow fingers, wrinkles, is a major risk factor for heart problems/ stroke. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.... more »

Go Hybrid

Many of the vehicles in the DOD, in my experience exclusively the military, are depended on day by day for many to perform the mission. Whether it be to drive to and from a briefing, sitting idle to watch traffic and clock speeders/ those who roll through the stop signs, to sit idle and drive crew chiefs and aircraft specialsts back and forth on the flight line as they prepare jets for their missions, the list goes on.... more »

Government Overspending

The US Governemnt pays top dollar on everything that they purchase. WHY!? We buy most things in bulk and you would think that we would get it for a cheaper price but we don't. Stop the useless overspending. I am an aircraft mechanic for the DoD and US Air Force Reserves. when we pay $250,000.00 for a winch it's getting a little ridiculous or $70,000.00 for a windshield, or even $5.00 bot a 10 cent bolt. Needless to say... more »

Stop helping everyone else and help OURSELVES!!

The US is willing to spend our hard earned tax dollars helping other countries that don't even want to help themselves. It's time to stop paying foreign aid and save that money until we can turn our debt around. Once we get our debt under control we can revisit the idea of wasting our money on other countries.
