Simple Computer Maintenance

Clean dust out of computer heat sinks. Run defragmentation and error check programs on hard drives.

My agency’s computer systems are grinding to a halt while we wait for new systems (and corresponding funding). New life can be breathed into existing system by performing simple common sense maintenance. CPU power can be improved by simply cleaning out six years worth of dust from the CPU heat sink.

Bank Card Reconcile

I have spent inordinate amounts of time in making purchases and reconciling my government purchase card. Enormous amounts of time is spent ensuring proper sources are used such as BPA, FSSI, and section 508 compliance. I have had to spend a great deal of time with some vendors that forget and put tax on the order. As a GS13 step 8, I may spend hours trying to get less than a dollars worth of tax refunded. Yard Care

Require all government buildings with yards to use envronmentally friendly landscaping. I have seen green grass on federal building landscaping in dought strcken areas. This must be a huge waste of water. But I have also seen checmicals used to defoliate rocked areas. The right mix is Zeriscape with natural plants and minimize environmental impacts. We need to set an example to our communities

With rising costs of more complicated experiments, increasing scientific collaboration is one of the hottest issues today. There... more »

Use the best tool for the job

Too often I see ideas rejected because they did not come from upper management, programs rejected because they were not created by the IT department, training materials rejected because they were not developed by the training staff, etc. There is a significant amount of time and money being lost in duplicating effort, usually resulting in a worse product. Both productivity and morale suffer when people are not able... more »
