LED lighting replacement in government buildings

Replace all lighting iwth LED lights where appropriate for the reduction of energy costs. Replacing incandescent bulbs with T4 lighting did not gain the level of savings required to equal the escalating cost of energy. The costs of the LED is going down, and this would result in a net decrease of energy use to the grid vice "maintaining" and slowing down the growth of power plants.

iPAD/ Kindle/ Nook vs Paper

As the world progresses so must the federal government. Purchasing data pads to replace paper (ones you can write and have download/ upload into your computer) would save hundreds of millions of dollars in paper and printing costs.

Eliminate mail reminders of appointments for patients

Instead of mailing multiple reminders to veteran and military patients pateints, the organization can email or phone the appointment reminders. This will not only cut down on postal costs but paper costs too. The automated reminder system will be sent via email or phone whichever is preferred by the patient. The preference will be specified upon registration into the health system.

Change 5/8 hr day schedule to 4/10 hr day staggered split crew

For agencies requiring 5 day coverage and who are working 5/8 hr shifts. Split the crew into two crews. Change the shift to a 4/10 hr shift. One crew will work M-Th, the other crew work T-FR. This will increase coverage to 10 hrs a day, for 5 days a week without increasing labor cost. Reduce Drinking Fountain Water and Energy Waste

This is a simple idea, but I think it can make a big impact if implemented across the Federal government. I am a graduate intern and am quite busy right now (work, thesis, etc.) so I have not been able to further research this idea, unfortunately. I think the analysis is worth doing, though, and would happy to assist with such research in the future. So here is my idea:

Water drinking fountains are wasteful; unless... more »
