Currently, hundreds of thousands of dollars on bottled water at firecamps in support of the firefighters. Tha majority of the water comes in 16 or 20 oz bottles. This creates a huge cost burden when it comes to disposal. Many of these bottles fly out of the back of vehicles and are left behind in our wildlands as Trash. Furthermore, many areas and states do not recycle.

At the VA Boston there is no visible comprehensive recycling plan. Employees use tons of recyclable products daily. Throwing away cans and bottles is a shame…but the paper is unacceptable. Almost all of the waste on my floor is paper. And right now we try to put as much paper as we can for the bins for sensitive data. But there really needs to be a can for paper and bottles on every floor. It would be very easy to implement... more »

As a government agency, we should encourage all of our employees and patients to help conserve the resources of the world by truly promoting recyling (having a thorough recyling program) as well as composting (for agencies with cafeterias i.e. Veterans Canteen Services). How can we expect for our fellow citizens to be environmentally friendly if we are not following our own advice.

Here are a few ideas that could save the government money by eliminating unnecessary expenditures:

1. Travel:
a. Audits or “Site Visits” should be conducted remotely when possible.
b. We should eliminate all travel for training and conferences and conduct these utilizing available technology.
2. Paper Waste: Leave and Earning Statements should only be provided electronically.
