Nix orientation printouts for new hires & use online orientation

Nix all of the printouts given to new employees --- healthcare, TSP, Life Insurance etc. Not only are ALL of those forms online, but also, the online version is more up to date and easier to fill out.

The standard should be set for new employees to receive a welcome email with links to all of the information they need to know and fill out --- as opposed to a stack of welcome folders that sits in the back of their desk... more »

Hand Sanitizer: You Only Need One Squeeze

It turns out that all of those Purell dispensers are pre-measured to deliver the correct amount of hand sanitizer in one squeeze. Who knew? I see patients and staff alike using 2-3 squeezes of sanitizer, at double or triple the necessary cost. A few informational posters in waiting rooms and a brief announcement during mandatory employee orientation would probably do the trick.

Electronic Employee Orientation Materials

I recently joined the workforce at the VA and I was shocked at the amount of paper wasted during orientation. Each employee received 3 textbook-sized booklets of papers in addition to many single handouts and forms. After orientation was over, many of these went right into the trash can (not even recycled), possible without ever being opened.
