Have DTMO/DTS Assume All Federal Travel Responsibilities

The Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) already performs the "travel agent" function for the Department of Defense. It has personnel in place to book flights and respond to travelers' questions and emergency travel needs. It also has an automated travel management system in place, the Defense Travel System (DTS). DTMO and DTS charge far less than their private industry counterparts (e.g., SATO, FedTraveler, Omega).... more »

Executive Office of the President

Establish a Cold War Service Medal

Its time to recognize the veterans of our longest war - the one's that won the Cold War. These are the men and women who stood watch for almost five decades against the Communist menace to preserve our freedom. Their sacrifices should not be forgotten and they are the only veterans whose sacrifices have not been suitably recognized with a military service medal. The President should sign an Executive Order establishing... more »

Make Allies Pay for Protection

Why should the USA pay other countries to allow US troops to be stationed there when their presence not only offers protection to the host country, but also gives the local economy a boost? The situation should be reversed--the host country should pay the USA and if they don't then close the base like we did in the Philippines. This logic should also apply to countries where we don't have a physical presence but we... more »

Reduce military spending

The most obvious large expenditure full of waste is the military. Any serious effort at reducing the federal budget deficit and finding ways to save money has to start with the military.
If we quit fighting wars and closed military bases in other countries, we would save billions of dollars a year.
Most of the other ideas about saving money are just nickles and dimes compared to military spending. If we're serious about... more »

No outside use without benefit to military on military lands

Other Agencies in the US Government do environmental documentation to decide if they will utilize military land for their use. Unfortunately these often conflict with needs on already constrained property and will not come to fruition. They also do feesibility studies which costs money. In addition the agency that would allow this to occur has to do their own documentation to make sure they are not held liable. This... more »

Merge DoD Components back into one standing army

The Army, Air Force, Navy, (Marines) have been necessary as 4 distinct services for good reason, but as tech has developed the roles have blended so much that the reasoning is becoming less and less valid. I suggest that a ten year plan be drafted to begin merging the services in the US Defence Service. I think operational commands and swimlanes of capability can be maintained as it still makes sense, but why would... more »

Task Force Homeland Defense

Many military commands have added relatively new organizations of Task Forces for Homeland Defense. These new Task Forces are intended to expedite DoD responses and coordination with civil authority and organization for natural disasters, terrorism or other homeland defense operations. Each of these organizations may consist of a staff department of over 50 personnel with all the associated facility, computers, logistic... more »

Consolidate AF Inspections

Consolidate AF inspections (UCI, LCAP, ORI, MCCI) into 1 inspection and have 1-POC for the inspections. Also, many inspections (ORIs) are obsolete (cold war era thinking). These serve no purpose other than to have MAJCOMs and Wing Commanders get a "warm-fuzzy" that their folks could survive if a ficticious cold war were to happen.

Flights from Technical Training to First Duty Station

When I left tech school at Lackland, I tried to get a flight from Albany, NY my hometown to London Heathrow airport my first base RAF Mildenhall.
But the CTO office said I would only be allowed a government flight from San Antonio to London. I had to purchase a flight from Albany to San Antonio. Then fly on government funds from San Antonio to London. I lose fund, and government funds are lost. It would have been cheaper... more »

Eliminate duplicate reporting. Save $10 Million dollars a year.

Our organization has been directed by higher authority to report on each contract action that contain "information technology" (IT) at a level that is not required by higher authority. The process is driven by an instruction which is built on previous government-wide guidance, definitions, and reference models, the process is outdated and invalid (as noted for many agencies in the Enterprise Architecture Segment Report... more »

Sustainable Energy Technologies(SETs) use in USAID, et al pgrms

As we distribute aid to developing and post-conflict nations, ensure Sustainable Energy Technologies(SETs) (ie. non-fossil fuel resources) are introduced during re/construction. Department of Defense and its Armed Services are already serving as models for those communities. Do not let our Soldiers', Sailors', Air Force's and Marines' efforts go to waste. The resulting revenue from US contracts to provide SETs will... more »

Longevity in Defense Capital Assets

Many years ago the government required that most, if not all, of its capital assets to have a usage life of at least 20 years. It was widely established in all branches of the armed forces. We spend far too much money buying the latest and greatest when much of what we already have will work perfectly fine and for quite some time. On that note, the Department of Defense needs to follow suit and reinvest in that lost... more »
