The decision was made to terminate the F-22 program. The purpose for the cancellation was to concentrate on the current war efforts as well as to “save money” to pay for the multi-service F-35 fighter program. Since that decision was made, the Chinese (and other countries who could potentially be threats to USA interests) have announced their entry into the “stealth fighter/bomber”, R&D, and aircraft production programs.... more »

In a March 1997 CBO report, “Reducing the Deficit Spending and Revenue Options,” DEF-16, “Make the Army Responsibility for Close Air Support (CAS),” the CBO proposed a revolutionary idea to decrease deficit spending. The report stated that transferring responsibility for CAS from the USAF to the Army would save the Department of Defense (DOD) $3.2 billion over 5 years in 1997 fiscal terms.
