Reduce software expenses with open source software and standards

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Currently, the U.S. government spends in excess of $1 billion annually to license software -- software that produces documents that are difficult to access after a few years because the new version of the software often doesn't work with the older documents. Since the document formats are proprietary, we have no way to access these documents other than by maintaining the unsupported older software. This has made transparency... more »

Eliminate paper licenses- Waste of money

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Currently for credentialing and privileging purposes, all licenses must be verified before completing an application which is usually done online as primary source verification which is acceptable by the Joint Commission. Then within 5 days a written license request has to be mailed. Usually the state licensing boards require a fee, some as high as $50 per license verification. And our office has never gained any additional... more »

Eliminate Corporate Tax Breaks

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

There is no reason the government nor the tax payer to be providing tax breaks for any company. The amount of time spent on this at the IRS is astonomical. This should be eliminated and then use that revenue to pay down the national debt. Make corporations pay their share of taxes. After all if they want to do business in this country they have a stake in its success.

Eliminate the Department of Education

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Do away with this agency completey and return the responsbility of education to the states and to the parents of children. Maintain a staff to run the Pell Grant program and do away with the rest. Having national standards for education is a complete waste of time. Education should be focused on developing an individual students talents instead of a broad liberal arts education. Having someone focus on a specific... more »

Designate one lead agency for international development

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
President Obama should designate one lead agency for international development to avoid costly, contentious and time-consuming interagency coordination and potential duplication of activities. For the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, for example, the staffing and level of coordination needed for 5 or 6 different government agencies working on HIV in a single country is incredibly time consuming and wasteful.... more »

STOP PAYING CONGRESSMEN & SENATORS WHO ARE IN PRISON

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Why is it that if I get put in jail I don't continue to get paid YET a senator or congressman does!!! Talk about waste, fraud and abuse--this is MAJOR. They also should not get a pension for doing one term, that continues for years and years after they leave office. They also should not be able to vote in raises for themselves---the US people should be able to do that. They act like they rule the world and are more important... more »

Smart procurement of Government vehicles

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
My idea can be enacted by the President in an hour. Have the entire Executive Branch streamline the procurement of Federal vehicles by limiting them to sedan models with a four cilinder engine only and light trucks limited to six cilinder engines only. Currently all American car manufacturers build fuel efficient vehicles with these features, even full size, 4x4 light trucks. Limiting procurement of vehicles to these... more »

Require Contractors to scan and submit proposals electronically

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

We have vendors who do business with the government who still deliver their proposals in paper form. We should require them to deliver all proposals electronically. It takes a large amount of time to scan these proposals and label them all. If I could get all of my proposals electronically it would mean quicker processing of propsals and allow me time to work more effectively and efficiently.

Use it or loose it policy

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
While serving in the USAF, I witnessed an abuse of funds. They started a use it or loose it policy, where if your department was fiscally conscious and came in under budget. The amount that was saved was not budgeted the next year, thus organizations are penalized for coming in under budget. The issue arises in that in my Fighter Squadron it was difficult to project what parts would break in combat. So what was done was... more »
