Environmental Protection Agency

Kick the Can, USA!

As summer interns in the Region 9 office of the Environmental Protection Agency, it has been exciting to see that EPA practices what it preaches! One of the best sustainability initiatives in the San Francisco office is to replace personal trash bins with larger bins in communal areas of each floor. This simple act saves money, reduces landfill waste, and gently encourages recycling.

In the EPA’s San Francisco office,... more »

Change 5/8 hr day schedule to 4/10 hr day staggered split crew

For agencies requiring 5 day coverage and who are working 5/8 hr shifts. Split the crew into two crews. Change the shift to a 4/10 hr shift. One crew will work M-Th, the other crew work T-FR. This will increase coverage to 10 hrs a day, for 5 days a week without increasing labor cost. It will reduce fuel consumption and green house gas emissions for crews that travel to remote sites driving government vehicles by... more »

Broaden TSP Fund Options and Open to Non Feds (for a fee)

In order to make the TSP more attractive and competitive with “like” institutional investment entities (i.e. TIAA CREF, Vanguard) I believe several indexed fund options should be added. These options would provide the opportunity for a more balanced portfolio. Once in place, their management would not adversely impact TSP operating cost. Here are the funds:

- T-Fund: Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS)... more »

Better use of software programs to reduce the cost of printing

The VA is supposed to go paperless in the future. So, why do we print the letters from MAP-D, PCGL, and RBA 2000, for the veteran’s file? These letters are all saved and available for viewing at any time. PCGL and RBA 2000 letters are in Virtual VA. Uploading MAP-D letters into Virtual VA would result in having all letters stored in one centralized location. Additionally, since we have access to the veteran’s medical... more »

Reduce/ Eliminate the National Debt - Not so Common Sense

My idea is for the "powers that be" to develop the ability for any monies left in the budget at the end of the year to be applied directly to the National Debt. Meaning that a local office can press a button and the monies go directly to the National Debt, they are not funneled back to parent agencies where the monies will be spent so they don't loose out the following year. Additionally I would like to add that being... more »

Centralized Processing for excessed equipment

Instead of wasting billions of dollars by crushing/destroying excess hardware, have equipment sent to a centralized location (or a local office) to be securely wiped and re-purposed in other agencies. That way other agencies could draw from equipment that was already paid for by tax dollars. It is ridiculous for one agency to spend money on equipment that another agency is preparing to destroy.

This could easily save... more »

Decrease costs and waste

At the VA Medical Center, we recently switched from having catheter bags that we attach to the indwelling catheter or Texas catheter, and now have these kits. Our facility doesn't have any of the stand-alone catheter bags anymore, so whenever we need a urine specimen and use a Texas catheter, or use a Texas catheter on someone who is incontinent, we have to open a whole CAUTI kit.

It seems like the solution would be... more »

HEIGHTEN LEO EFFICIENCY/CONSOLIDATE UNDERUTILLIZED CBPO ENFORCEM

We can stream line overlapping law enforcement functions/jurisdictions, and save money, have a higher amount of productivity and utilization of resources,a stronger more defined mission, and a stronger more supportive Chain of Command adherant to the Criminal Law Enforcement mission. This will be accomplished by consolidating the criminal law enforcement functions of the underutillized, misappropriated "orphan" positions... more »
