Discontinue the use of land lines, and use mobile phones at the office and when telecommuting.
Unplug mobile chargers when not in use. Only 5% of the power drawn by a mobile phone charger is used to charge the phone. The rest is wasted when it is left plugged in.
Many of the long term OWCP claims could be eliminated by creating regional/centralized phone/email monitoring centers. Claimants could monitor 100% of the inmate phone calls and emails. This would make the employee productive and useful.
Let's use a VOIP system that uses the internet for telephone calls. Once the system is in place, all phone calls would be nearly free of charges. Let's do this on a government-wide scale to save us money!
When on travel, government workers are allowed up to $5 reimbursement for a "safe-call" home. Receipts are not required and everyone I know claims this on their travel voucher. In this day and age of cell phones, when was the last time you were charged $5 for making a phone call anywhere?
Some installations (and also public lands) have cell phone carriers who lease out land to have cell phone towers on them. Require that a provision of the lease be to allow the government cell phones and blackberries at that particular area to have free coverage on that providers network.
Cell phones are good...they are being paid for only have one line per person. You do not need a land line and a cell line. Save our government money! Work smart!
