government standard open source computer operating system

We should be using a minimal auditable secure open source operating system throughout the government. Rather than invent one from scratch, use Linux or some BSD variant. Invest a few of the billions of dollars used to license untrustworthy commercial software to carefully audit the OS and some essential applications.

Migrate to Linux and Open Desktop Suite during Consolidation

Computer (IT) equipment (HW) would not need to be updated with the frequency that is common with Microsoft (MS) products if this idea were followed: Each newly-installed MS operating system (OS) is usually coupled with new desktop (PC) HW. Microsoft Windows? Why Not Linux!?

We have a multi-million, possibly multi-billion dollar contract with Microsoft for the Windows operating system, Office programs and Server software. If we were to switch to Linux based operating systems, software packages and servers (Ubuntu, Mac Lion, Libre Office, etc.) we would instantly save those millions/billions in software licensing costs.
