Bus checkpoints to save millions of gallons of gas

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
At the NASA Glenn Research Center, it's difficult to find parking anywhere on lab. Many people drive a huge 4-door sedan or SUV, just to drive themselves to work. For many suburbs, RTA buses are not spaced optimally for us and using them takes too long to get to work.

I propose finding under-utilized parking lots at checkpoints strategically located miles away from federal workplaces and use them for employee parking.... more »

Curb wasteful spending on unnecessary shipping costs

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
A staggering amount of money is wasted on unnecessary expedited shipping costs. In most instances, it isn't necessary to send or receive items/mail/etc. via UPS and FedEx unless there is a justifiable reason to do so. Lots of items are better suited being shipped via USPS at an equally efficient rate of speed and a much cheaper rate. It's disappointing that U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail shipping isn't even offered... more »

Kick the Can, USA!

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
As summer interns in the Region 9 office of the Environmental Protection Agency, it has been exciting to see that EPA practices what it preaches! One of the best sustainability initiatives in the San Francisco office is to replace personal trash bins with larger bins in communal areas of each floor. This simple act saves money, reduces landfill waste, and gently encourages recycling.

Electronic Notice Option

At Social Security, we spend most of our time interviewing and working with the public. The most time consuming portion of our day is compiling and sending notices for documentation requests, close outs of leads, and other necessary activities. Members of the public should be given the option of receiving their notices and forms by email, especially when claims are submitted via internet. This would allow for faster processing... more »

Furthermore, these forms should be migrated to an online system, which would save paper. The form for an average research study application in my... more »

Laptop or Desktop

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Most all employees in the Department of Justice, and possibly other Federal agencies, are designated a desktop computer (monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse), Blackberry, and laptop computer. Many employees that receive a laptop may work from home 2 or 3 times per year. This a potentially an enormous and wasteful expense. Not only are laptops potentially expensive to purchase, but IT offices must set up each laptop and... more »

Paperless Work System at NASA

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
NASA has made efforts to move to paperless work, but never completely committed to it. Instead, paperless systems have simply been a second layer on top of the paper system. Many of the obstacles to paperless systems have been overcome with the advent of laptops and tablets (to provide portable access to work authorizing documents), RFID badges (to provide identity authentication for signing task steps) and other new... more »

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Problem: The underlying problem is lack of Technology Utilization. Technology exists on every Government computer with functionalities, features, capabilities, and tools that are not being utilized and therefore the return on investments in Technology is low. Most end-users of technology are not technology experts and therefore do not realize the full capabilities in order to perform their functions efficiently with the... more »
