Homeless Empowerment Centers

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
With the rise of unemployment and thousands of Americans living on the streets, I think the government could save costs by creating a program very similar to the CCC (Circa 1933-1944) that will use existing housing areas and create large centers whose sole purpose is to give homeless Americans of all ages a place to sleep, eat, learn and work. The centers will provide food, water, housing and medical care to help get... more »

LABOR-Develop a reasonable labor requirement to cut cost the Govt, would otherwise spend on Fed employees, contractors, or private sector. Since they are receiving better healthcare than most, cable which some still can't afford, and exercise equipment which some can't afford or are to busy working to use, we might as well educate them and give them a skill so they may positively contribute to society. Maybe in the process... more »

Stop Paying Twice for Windows

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
We buy computers from Dell. Each computer comes with a license from Microsoft. (Sticker with license key) We then buy an Enterprise license to install Windows (any version) on that computer. Dell sells computers without Windows. We can buy our computers without Microsoft licenses, and then install our Enterprise software. (Volume Licensing)

We never use the preinstalled version, and we never use the license key we pay... more »

Criminalize vote bartering and ex parte legislative discussions.

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
When a piece of legislation is brought before a legislative body (either the House or the Senate), it is nothing short of bribery to vote swap (i.e., I'll vote for your bill if you vote for mine; or I'll vote for your bill if you give my district X dollars via an unrelated amendment).

Two rules could fix this:
1) No off-the-record conversations about pending legislation (ex parte communication). It is simply unfair... more »

Renewable Energy

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
I left this in the Legislative Branch category because it can and does apply to many agencies. There is a big push by this administration to use solar and wind technology. Why are we not practicing what we preach? Why is there not a wind and solar farm on the White House lawn? I work at an Air Route Traffic Control Center and we use massive amounts of electricity. We also have massive amounts of space on the roof... more »

Eliminate Cars/Drivers Except When Security Dictates

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
At Dept of Transportation Headquarters, only the Secretary/Deputy Secretary of Transportation use a car with driver. At DoD -- and at executive agencies in and around Washington -- there are many senior officials who use a car service for meetings across the river. In this era of excessive government spending, I don't think taxpayers would be pleased to see civil servants driven to meetings -- and the annual cost of... more »

Paper & Postage Reduction Cost - Dual Notice Requirement

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Currently, any correspondence to taxpayers who file a joint return with the IRS require separate notices to the husband and wife. This results in additional costs for paper, printer, toner, postage, envelope, and other associated expenses.

While this requirement should not be eliminated entirely, the requirement should revise to allow married filing joint taxpayers to sign a waiver allowing examiners, collection officers,... more »

Personnel Reductions - VBA Held Hostage by Incompetent Employees

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
VBA Central Office must step up to the plate and fire under-performers, END OF STORY.

VBA Central Office employees essentially have zero performance standards. I am 100% certain my office could perform BETTER with LESS THAN HALF the current number of employees on staff. Talk about cost savings!

How can GS-13 employees who are only responsible for "attending" a few meetings a week receive satisfactory performance... more »

Give the Government a smaller more economical footprint

Why do so many agencies have to be on top of one another in DC, leasing large buildings at high fees? When leases come due, or possible early terminiation of leases, agencies should use desk sharing and telework and efficient space planning to take up less physical space. Why do all agency staff have to work in DC? Does every employee go to the Hill daily? I doubt it. Move agencies out from DC, decentralize - move... more »

Alternate Work Schedule & Telework Mandate

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
With roughly two million federal civilian employees, of which 15% (~300,000+) work in the Washington DC Metro area, demand put on the daily infrastructure (I-66, I-95, etc) is substantial. Currently, most personnel would work a normal 40 hour work week (5 days x 8 hours). If an AWS (Alternate Work Schedule) was put in place, where each employee would work eight, 9 hour days and one, 8 hour day per pay period, this would... more »

Get rid of Congresses Personal Jets and Other things

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
Right now the biggest thing that comes to my mind is Nancy Pelosi and the multi million dollar jet she had the government pay to get her so she could fly nonstop from her home state to DC, with her, her crew, and 200 reporters. Seriously, why is the government paying to transport reporters? Everytime her aircraft flys in any direction it costs the taxpayers 60,000 dollars. Why not do away with all the private aircraft,... more »

END BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP!!

Community Member kudos icon + Community member
This is an idea from the 1800s that anyone born on United States soil is automatically a citizen. Other countries do not do this! You have to be born of a citizen to be a citizen. I think ending this practice will basically solve one of the biggest immigration issues we have. The practice of illegal imigrant coming here to have children (aka anchor babies) so that they can stay in this country. Just something to think... more »

Eliminate Government Programs that have no effect.

Community Member kudos icon + Community member

Why is the government sponcering so many programs that in the long run show no affect on what they are for? I would like to know.

Anyway, lets get rid of all the programs that have been proven to show no affect other than to just make you feel good they are there. With the resources freed up from those programs we can put more money into education or debt repayment and get this country right back on track.
