Security Screening Cost Saving

Secretary Napolitano suggests raising security fees.

In the following presentation to the DFW Occupational Safety and Health Specialist the premise of reducing the burden of the carry-on baggage handled by TSA Officers is highlighted.

According to the safety proposal as a weight/size reduction begins as compliance with already established FAA protocol the size/weight restriction on carry-on baggage and... more »

P.M.S! - PRIORITIZE MONEY SPENT!

Something that I have noticed in my 2 yrs of civil service is that the government spends so much money on office supplies. For example ordering document protectors @ $25/for a box of 50 is ridiculous when you can get them from places like Office Depot @ $10/for a box of 50. That highlighter that you are using cost the government about $8/9 for a box of 6, when it could have been purchased for $3/$4 for a box of 6 at Office... more »

Contract Savings

I have come from Private Industry and am amazed at the amount of money that is spent on Contractors. We pay for the office space, travel, in some cases training, office supplies and equipment, pass-throughs. We could save millions of dollars annually if our contracts eliminated this kind of spend. We need to standardize our requirements across all the agencies, review the criteria and start eliminating this type of... more »

Converting Unused Sick Leave to Annual Leave

Federal employees should have the ability to convert unused sick leave accrual to annual leave. Employees should be mandated to carry a minimum balance of unused sick leave before they would be able to convert furture hours into annual leave. For instance: an employee must have 240 hours of accrued sick leave in order to convert future hours. Conversion could be a two hour or three hour of sick leave for one hour... more »

Consolidate AF Inspections

Consolidate AF inspections (UCI, LCAP, ORI, MCCI) into 1 inspection and have 1-POC for the inspections. Also, many inspections (ORIs) are obsolete (cold war era thinking). These serve no purpose other than to have MAJCOMs and Wing Commanders get a "warm-fuzzy" that their folks could survive if a ficticious cold war were to happen.

EXOP - Office of Science and Technology Policy

Consolidation of technology/new media efforts

A follow to my post below: I learned that although the gov't has well-trained, talented people, we are using outside contractors to do the work at $300 an hour that we could/should do ourselves.

The speed at which technology is outpacing government practices calls for a new way for departments and agencies to keep up the pace. Each agency has used, is currently using or plans to create tools that will take advantage... more »

Save billions by using military instead of contractors

The Government pays contractors billions of dollars to do installation projects that could be accomplaished by assets that are already in place! I work in the Telecommunications field and have deployed twice to Iraq and Afghanistan to install communications on bases there. I also went to Iraq for 1 year as a contractor. I made more money in the one year as a contractor (over 170k) than I did the other 2 combined! And... more »

Paper & Postage Reduction Cost - Dual Notice Requirement

Currently, any correspondence to taxpayers who file a joint return with the IRS require separate notices to the husband and wife. This results in additional costs for paper, printer, toner, postage, envelope, and other associated expenses.

While this requirement should not be eliminated entirely, the requirement should revise to allow married filing joint taxpayers to sign a waiver allowing examiners, collection officers,... more »

Go Hybrid

Many of the vehicles in the DOD, in my experience exclusively the military, are depended on day by day for many to perform the mission. Whether it be to drive to and from a briefing, sitting idle to watch traffic and clock speeders/ those who roll through the stop signs, to sit idle and drive crew chiefs and aircraft specialsts back and forth on the flight line as they prepare jets for their missions, the list goes on.... more »

Increase Federal Acquisition Regulation Dollar Thresholds

A very simple federal cost cutting idea is to further streamline and expedite procurements by increasing Federal Acquisition Regulation dollar thresholds as follows:

1. FAR 2.101 - Micro-Purchase Threshold Definition: Replace the $3,000 threshold with $10,000.

2. FAR 2.101 - Government Point of Entry: Replace the $25,000 threshold with $100,000.

3. FAR 2.101 - Simplified Acquisition Threshold: Replace the $150,000... more »
