Reduce Travel Costs

The government wastes a ton of money by restricting how travel is arranged. I had to fly from Anchorage to Miami a couple years ago and using the government mandated travel company (SATO) the ticket cost a little over $2,000 - plus a $37 booking fee. Use of government approved airline carriers

Overseas we are forced to use only US airline carriers or their equivalent for TDY. In Germany this means Miles and More partners of which United is a partner. These airlines are the most expensive. The inability to use other options cost the government to use more expensive flights. The ability to use other, cheaper airlines is not possible with this policy.

Travel planning

Current policy requires Fed Traveler for booking flights and these are typically charged full fare, yet the actual seat and schedule flexibility is lacking what can be found on routine travel sites like Expedia. These sites also offer much more competitive rates even if travel insurance is included. Using a competitive rate for booking travel could easily save millions... my typical regional trip costs more that $1200...... more »
