Some offices at NIH are piloting Unified Communications, which allows users to make phone calls (including calls with video), use voice mail, hold meetings, and share desktops via the Internet. It seems an efficient way to hold meetings and could be more cost effective, and thus result in savings, than traditional telecommunications services (i.e., the telephone). It could have value beyond telecommunications, such as reducing travel costs and paper use, as workers become more adept at using it and more accustomed to sharing information electronically.
