Why are we replacing supplies that are not worn out or broken?

Each year the VA wastes 10's Millions of dollars replacing CPAP/BIPAP supplies that are not worn out or broken. At the VA Maine facility we implemented a new oversight program and we saved $400,000 the first year by only replacing supplies that are worn out or broken rather than routinely. Imagine how much could be saved if all VA Hospitals did this? Medicare Guidelines which we used as a reference allow routine replacement of supplies without oversight. At $100 to $300 a mask the amount of waste in the Medicare and VA system of these supplies runs into the 10's if not 100's of Millions of dollars a year. Here at VA Maine we have Respiratory Therapists who screens all these orders to ensure that only what is needed is ordered.

With Sleep Apnea affecting 11% of the population

the amount of waste is enormous.
