The Energy Information Institute estimates that 10% of average electric bill pays for are not being used, but that percentage could be higher if computers, laptops and other equipment are left on or in standby mode. A simple yet effective solution would be to replace current dumb power strips with smart power strips that can sense and auto shutoff when attached computers and devices are in off state. To implement this idea, the agency would need to do a simple survey to identify what devices should be attach to smart power strips, then purchase and install smart power strips. This simple solution can save the government tremendous amount of money in the short and longer term with minimum upfront investment.
