In my locality alone, there are 19 different health insurance plans to select from. Do we really need to have that many to choose from? By having so many plans to choose from, it reduces the ability of OPM to negotiate better rates which increases the premiums to the Government and federal worker. If we go to the insurance companies and tell them that the Government will only be taking three to six health care plans a year, it gives the Government better purchasing power since there will be more employees in those 3 to 6 plans instead of the 19 currently offered. This would also force the insurance companies to put their best plans forward. The savings can be to the Government and to the federal workers as well as better health benefits provided by the insurance companies.
