In our canteen, we are using Styrofoam plates and plastic silverware. If this is true for the canteens throughout the country, then this needs to be fixed. The amount of trash this creates just from one day of lunch is enormous. That’s not very green!
Why can't we use the trays similar to the ones we used in high school and elementary school. The hard plastic reusable trays. They would only require a high heat wash like they do at restaurants and cafeterias all across the USA. We can also do away with a majority of the plastic utensils.
Of course there will be some need for Styrofoam to go boxes and plastic sporks, but the daily drop in trash would make this worth it alone.
Also, the fact that the Styrofoam plates are so flimsy they are having to use 2-3 for each lunch is just adding to the waste.
