Restaurants, bars, hospitals, school campuses, state offices, other business have gone NO SMOKING. Smoking causes: dependency, cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bad breath, yellow fingers, wrinkles, is a major risk factor for heart problems/ stroke. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. There are approximately 3 Mil fed gov civilians in the US. According to the CDC, 21% of persons 18+ smoke. Average that % across civ personnel, there are 577,285 that smoke in the US. The average amount of work time that a smoker uses to smoke is 6 hrs per week. Average all federal employee salaries and get $21.40 per hr. Take that # X Fed Civ x 6 hours smoking = $6676 salary paid to be outside smoking, X 577,285 fed civ persons that smoke and that is $3,853,954,660 per yr salary wasted in non productive work..
The CDC averages US health costs at $10.28 per pack of cigarettes smoked. The Average smoker smokes 365 packs a year which = $3898 per year per person. That cost alone is $22 Million for civ workers. All American’s pay the cost of smoking illness – increased insurance costs, Medicare costs etc. Smoking causes 20% of all US deaths. US smokers run up bills of 97 billion dollars in health care and lost productivity. Federal civilian employees make up 9 % of the total US population; therefore approximately 9 Billion is lost on civilian personnel alone.
If you add all that up, the government/taxpayers could save direct and indirect costs of approximately 12 Billion a year.
Not discussed- cost/risk of second hand smoke to the 79 % of civ personnel who do not smoke, the $ amount used to keep the areas that smokers used clean of cigarette butts, repairing stomped on grass, cost of smoke shacks, painting “no smoking” signs on pavement and buildings, nor have I taken into account any military members on federal instillations that smoke etc.
