Fraud, waste, and abuse is a significant problem at SSA. Oftentimes, overpayments are charged to individuals who are not entitled to the benefits they received. When a person pays back an overpayment, they usually pay it in small monthly payments. However, the person has to wait for a paystub and mail in a check or credit card information every month. Overpaid beneficiaries do not have an option to pay online quickly or automatic deductions from their bank account. Collection efforts can be efficient if provided automated payments or an option to pay via internet in the same way that people pay their credit cards or utility bills. This can help increase the percentage of recovery and dollar amount recovered from overpayments assessed to beneficiaries.
