Many of our defense sites are located in areas which would benefit greatly from the use of green technologies. For example, sites located in desert locations could use solar panels to help alleviate the energy costs of daily business and of course air conditioning. I understand the upfront costs would be a bit more then other energy upgrades, but in the long term savings and environmental benefits would be huge. Every site DoD operates can use some form of green technology to help reduce operating costs and environmental impacts. From green roofs, to solar panels, to water and general recycling all aspects should be considered and used.
To often we in the government do not look to the long term benefits of technology, and instead look at the upfront costs to implement. As the United States Government we should lead in the example of green technologies, and demonstrate the cost and more importantly environmental benefits of these technologies.
