Traditional lawns are inefficient. They require large amounts of water, fertilizer, pesticides, etc. compared to native plants. Migrating to the greater use of xeriscaping and more native plants, with the decrease of grass covering landscapes, could save millions of gallons of water and significant expenses of cutting, trimming, transport of the cuttings, etc.
Having more natural plants would also help with attracting more birds compared with traditional, energy-intensive lawns.
