I am submitting this idea on behalf of Supervisor Joe Schmitt of Minneapolis, MN who works for OPM-Federal Investigative Services. He worked for the private sector in Minneapolis Field Office and his position allowed for him to have a corporate purchase card. His company was able to contract with certain large vendors for large cost savings of services. The federal government does this with various vendors as well with office supplies and mail/package delivery services where these companies offer discounted prices because of our scale of size.
Joe proposed that our federal government take the initiative to explore do ing the same thing with our fuel. The federal government should explore working out contracts with our largest fuel providers (BP, Shell, Mobil, 76, etc) to get discounted fuel. Without stats, it is hard to say how many millions would be saved for the taxpayers, but it certainly would be in the millions.
