In the Coast Guard, females are issued unnecessary uniforms. If they are authorized to wear the male uniform, they should have to option to purchase the male items the first time the uniform is issued. For example, at the Coast Guard Academy, all females are issued two pairs of female tropical blue long trousers upon reporting in. These cost about $40/pair. Very few women continue to wear these trou into the school year because they purchase the male trou. The female trousers are then discarded. By not allowing the females to buy the male trou right away, they have an extra burden of buying more uniform items out of pocket than their male counterparts. Reducing the amount of demand for the female items will consequentially reduce the need for people to process orders, tailor items, etc.
