Here at the USPTO, the lights in the hallways and offices go off automatically after a certain hour at night and on the week-ends, leaving the hallways partially lit. However, someone working late or on a weekend can override the auto shut off system and re-energize an an entire section of the building including full hallway lights, only to have the lights on in one particular office. My idea to conserve energy is to set up the auto shut off system such that when the override button is pressed, to have only the office lights come on while leaving the main hallway lights off. In this manner the additional energy and costs to light the hallway can be conserved.
