Only employees that are deem emergency personnel in each Agency’s shut down plan prepared and distributed last April should be provided with government funded Blackberries (or other mobile devices). Everyone has cell phones these days and if you need to contact employees just text or call them on their own cell phones.
With that being said, I recognize that this will most likely not happen, as many people are addicted to their blackberries. However, the government pays for numerous people to have blackberries but these devices are seldom used for their phone abilities . . . it is the email function that everyone uses the most. I recommend that government-wide all phone capabilities of all blackberries for non-emergency employees be turned off, saving the government a considerable amount of funding each year and having little impact on operations as people do not use the service.
